"You talk about a certain journey. Well, if that journey were a possible one, and I were given the chance of making it, I would be willing never to come back.
For twenty-four hours on that Arcturian planet, I would give my life..."
And with those words , Maskull, an Earthling of Europe in the 1920's, began an extraordinary adventure, a voyage to Tormance, the one inhabited planet of the star Arcturus. A voyage to a land of glittering spiritual beauty and bizarre physical transformations... a journey that would become a most perilous excursion into the depths of one's self.
To put it bluntly, it's a fantastical take on science fiction which thrives on otherworldly descriptions and depictions of curious moral and philosophical themes. I found it all quite enjoyable... capable of throwing one's mind into a blender.
It's just shy of 300 pages in length (REAL pages, not that over-spaced baby crap) but the content alone is worth a book of triple that amount. The characters he develops have complexity worthy of being prime players in any long running series, yet these intriguing figures leave the stage but pages after they are introduced. It remains a personal voyage throughout for the everyman protagonist, a voyage that those with a taste for the surreal will be sure to enjoy.
