After releasing their quarterly earnings report, Activision held a conference call where publishing CEO Mike Griffith provided the company's forecast to the future of the console wars. While Wii will be the overwhelming winner, Griffith predicts PS3 will beat Xbox 360 by a 1-2 million margin this year.

According to the company, Wii is forecast to sell 15 million units. PS3 will sell 8 million, while Xbox 360 will sell 6-7 million. Not strangely, the PS2 is also expected to continue srong, with 4-5 million units sold.

This isn't the first major publisher to go on record with high expectations for the PS3. EA went on record in February with a similar prediction.

even if ps3 sells 1 to 2 million more units then 360, it's still got a hella lot of catching up to do concidering the size of the intalled userbase of the 360 prior to the ps3's release.

concidering the slow down in sales for a now 3 year old console i'm supprised it's taken the ps3 this long to over take the annual sales of the 360.

oh who am i kidding. knock japan out of the running and the ps3's still miles behind.

Anyway, I think PS3's sells are going to rise but I think the 360's sells are going to rise as well, especially in Japan. I don't know if people have been following it, but MS is eating jrpg's like they're cookies and if japanese gamers want to play their old PS2 favorite's successors then they're going to have to buy a 360. Coupled with the fact that MS is urging big name japanese companies to pump out titles for their platform, I'd venture to guess reluctant jgamers are going to succumb to the lure of Microsoft's plan

I dunno about this. I think that the 360 will still remain in 2nd worldwide sales this year and quite possibly next year. Those jrpgs are really going to sell the console to Japanese users and multipatform support means that many PS3 titles will end up on 360 as usual. Of course it also works vice-versa.

Yep, sorry, publishers have been preaching this since before the 360 was even released. This is exactly why so many are losing their lunch money...

The only thing that has changed is everyone has stopped saying the Wii is a fad that will crash and burn, and started saying that it is obviously going to be the best selling and that the real race is between #2 and #3.

Only when MS cuts support for the 360 (once the successor is released and selling well) will the PS3 outsell the 360, and that's only because Sony will support the PS3 for too long after the next gen starts.

I think it's good that Sony actually supports it's consoles. We've all seen the problems that companies like Sega had, where they would launch a system and then a year or two later throw in the towel. Yes Nintendo and Microsoft may launch a new system before Sony, but their support for the PS3 will go on and I think that's a very good thing, especially since the PS3 has the capabilities to play games that overshadow those that are on either of the other systems.

If everyone else is happy buying a new system every 4 years then have at it, but I'd like to get more value out of my purchases.

If the PS3 sells only to the level of the GCN/Xbox, watch how they DON'T support it "well into the next generation".

yeah the only reason i have a 360, is cause of the exclusive rpgs.. but i remain a playstation gamer.

Zerock you should add your name to the official PSN thread that has been pinned. I didn't even know you had a PS3... The PS3 will perhaps pass the 360 but I really do wonder what will happen once the next system for Microsoft comes out. It's a wait and see thing but in all honestly I've got my PS3 and I'm pretty happy with it and could care less if it comes in 2nd or 3rd.
