Apple - Nintendo DS is the past

“There are already so many games [for the iPhone and iPod Touch], and as we look at it, to us, it really seems this is the future of gameplay. Whereas a lot of these devices [Nintendo DS and Sony PSP] are more in the past. The computer power and the 3D graphic power here is significantly greater than what you have here [picks up DS]. So, this allows people to do significantly higher quality games.” - Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of iPod and iPhone Product Marketing

Do you own an iPhone? If so, do you use it as your primary hand-held gaming device?

RE: Apple - Nintendo DS is the past
Yes... I love my DS and the games on it are certainly better, but I do game on my iPhone more often just because it is always with me. The fact that it does everything and fits in my pocket helps. Also, it's great because I can download new games (many for free, virtually all are under $10) from anywhere. They are saved on the device so that I don't have to worry about cartridges. I only use my DS when I'm at home or on a trip, as opposed to playing a quick game of LuxTouch (which was free) on my iPhone whenever I have 5 minutes to spare.
I do think the comparison is a little off, though. It's like saying that the PC is a better gaming device than consoles just because more people play more often on it (in regards to solitaire).
I do think it will require handheld devices to rethink themselves. Can anyone say digitally downloaded full version games, saved on the next Nintendo handheld's internal memory? Perhaps require that they are downloaded through the Wii even? Perhaps the DS demos were a test before rolling out that. Multitouch screen that uses fingers instead of stylus? Motion sensing? There is a lot that handheld gaming can learn from the iPhone, but I don't think the iPhone (considering the price and all) will be displacing the DS anytime soon.

So long as its more then a 256MB capacity. d:<
And no; don't own an iPhone.
If apple made a definitive handheld gaming device, that coincidentally played music; the apple fanboys/girls will eat it up. I'm willing to bet that it'd do better then the PSP2.

Oh Apple. Douche's. iPhones are too expensive for me to consider, and really they don't seem to have games that live up to the quality of the DS. Heck, the PSP is more tempting to me than an iPhone.
But I usually try to avoid buying into Apple crap. I mean I bought a Nano last year and there is already a new version out for it. Sigh.

RE: Apple - Nintendo DS is the past
No way will Apple break into the handheld gaming market with just the iPhone. Now if they make a system that is devote completely to games then maybe they'll have a shot (then again that's what Sony thought and look at where they are with the PSP now).
Help bring Tatsunoko vs Capcom to us!

The PSP is constantly fluctuating. Its not an altogether *bad* handheld, its just that the DS is a much more enjoyable handheld.
I'd be rooting for Sony over Apple.

RE: Apple - Nintendo DS is the past
I heart my iphone big time but I don't think it will ever be able to compete with under portable gaming devices without buttons. I can only touch and tilt so much on certain games before it becomes tiresome. I will admit that I do play games on my iPhone everyday though but I don't own a Nintendo DS or PSP anymore and it's mainly when traveling to and from work.

RE: Apple - Nintendo DS is the past
It's not just iPhone as a gaming device, but iPod touch.
I use my iPod touch almost exclusively as my gaming device right now. It's so amazing what they (the small-time developers) can do with the capabilities of the iPod touch and iPhone. Games like "Tap Tap Revenge", "Lux Touch" and "Jelly Car" are proof that iPod touch is a more capable gaming device that DS.
This is coming from a DS owner.

Using an iPod Touch as a gaming device? Why... I'd use it for music... because I have a DS as a gaming device.

Right, because I'd want to waste battery life on my phone and music player for games. Especially when I have a DS which, as all should know, has a damn good library.

If Apple did break into the market, they would sell based on fan boyism.
thats pretty much good enough ebcause devs would look at it and see sales.

If you could have the Nintendo DS library but with graphics on par with the PSP then it would be awesome. They both have their weak points and I no longer own either of them.

I think apple is talking nonsense. DS games can run laps around the iphone/itouch.
