RE: Brawl Won't Play on a Modded Wii
This is true. How do I know? It happened to me. Basically this only happens with Wiikey as the software has trouble reading dual-layer disks. Although backup copies work, real versions of the game do not. As a Wiikey owner I had to corrupt my modchip (software style) to stop it working so I could play Brawl using my freeloader. This is not an April Fools joke, nor is it a new clamp down from Nintendo. It is because of sloppy programming from the Wiikey team.

Thanks for your post! I too have been unimpressed with the WiiKey programming team. Luckily there are a large group of users for this chip, thus solutions (not always the best) always surface.

Why the hell would you be disappointed? Its Nintendo's fault people mod.
Uh no, its not. Thats a pretty BS statement. Its YOUR fault if you mod. Its YOUR fault that you are bored and impatient and cheap. Not anyone else's. The only person ever responsible for YOUR actions, is YOU. Not anyone else. You are the only person who can make you do anything. All the rest is cop outs and excuses. If Nintendo does things in a way that just isnt enough for you, then seek other venues, but honestly...when you get down to it, modding enables illegally dl'ing games, and it was it is: crime.

Thanks for the post buddy! That's a great help! That would also explain why pirated copies work i.e. compressed files burned onto a blank DVD.

Yes, modchips open up the possibility of illegally downloading games, but they are not the only reason that modchips exist. Many people do it to get around region locks (the DS, for instance, does not have a region lock. Why does the Wii?) so that they can play games that are unavailable to them. Other do it so they can make legitimate copies of the games that they own, in order to keep their original in playable condition (and are within their legal rights to do so).
What is ironic about this is that a REAL copy of Brawl will not play on a Wii that has a modchip installed. However, a pirated copy not only plays in a modified Wii, it plays BETTER in a modded Wii than a real copy in an unmodded Wii.
Nintendo is completely within their right to lock out certain features of their system (and OWNERS of the system are within their right to modify a system that they own however they way). However, Nintendo should not force modified Wii owners to pirate a game just to play it (as many modified Wii owners are completely happy purchasing a retail copy of Brawl, but cannot).

So what's your opinion Joker, will this drive up pirated downloads of the game? I'm guessing the reason for the fact that it
1. Plays, and
2. Plays better on a pirated version
is because the pirated versions are on single-layer DVDs, which would mean that the game wouldn't have to transition over to the second layer and also since the laser of the Wii wouldn't have to penetrate the top layer to retrieve data from the second layer.

RE: Brawl Won't Play on a Modded Wii
Why do we have region blocking now? To represent game prices for the countries economy? Or to deal with issues on older televisions? What do Sony and Microsoft do to prevent games from playing in different regions?

Well Sony don't use region locks, so that's another point in favor of them.

I wouldn't mind, but Sony have international releases. Nintendo's best effort to do this was with Super Mario Galaxy .

You are all very smart; I never thought that this could be an April Fools joke. Either way it wouldn't affect me, although if it was true then I feel sorry for those who do have a modded Wii and hoped to play Brawl. Bummer.

Considering that Brawl might be the biggest Wii game to date, and that no modchip owner can play it (there are a lot of them), they are forced to pirate the game to play it (or disable the modchip).
But no, the pirated copies are Dual Layer, and they play great. The original JPN copies were single layer, until people figured out how to make the DL copy. (single layers lacked the videos and gave an error if you hit one).

Yeah, Joker's right. The pirated versions are DVD 9 (Dual Layer) not DVD 5 (single layer). They tend to cost a pinch bit more than the normal pirated copies but considering the quality is better than the real one and if you have a modchip you can't play the real one the answer is quite obvious, sadly.

If Nintendo can't localise fast enough how is that my fault? Konami are getting MGS4 out everywhere within a week. Bungie had Halo 3 out in simliar time frames.
Why do Nintendo get off the hook? If they can't manage themselves properly then f*** them. I encourage everyone to mod or get freeloaders.
Then again, I think Nintendo are full of crap recently anyway.
