The day has come finally. Ever since i heard there was going to be a second Battalion Wars game and and have an online mode I became overly excited. If you have been on these forums for any amount of time you should all probably know that i am a Battalion Wars freak. So naturally, my expectations for this game were very high. Sadly though, it doesn't seem like very many other people were as excited for this game as I was. Yes, this game seemed to go under the radar for gamers and press alike. When i asked for this game at GameStop I received a "What? They made a second?". So, without further ado, here is my attempt to tell people how much this game rocks!
For some odd reason, people in the crazy war driven world of Battalion Wars love to fight... all the time. The game starts about 200 years in the past. The Iron legion are attempting to finally crush the free nations of the world once and for all but the Solar Empire was there to stop them. With a newly created weapon that can draw down the power of the sun, the Iron legion is crushed under the shadow of its enemy. The weapon was hidden so that it may not fall into the hands of those that might us it for all the wrong reasons. Fast forward to present day where we find that the Anglo Islands are attempting to take over the solar empire in order to find this super weapon. The story is deep and fun. In the beginning i found myself falling asleep, but i eventually began to fall in love with the characters and the story. A few downfalls, are how long it took to draw me in and the voice acting. It took a good 4 - 5 missions for me to really start getting into what was going on in the world and why but i think it was because of all the tutorials you must go through to get to the hard missions. The voice acting was WAY over the top! Even more then the first game. And why is there always a skinny blond chick who looks like Pairs Hilton as a general..? But besides those points its a pretty good story like that dose the first good justice.
Why yes it is cold... Thank you for asking!
The graphics are by far the worst thing about this game and that was very disappointing to me. The environments are huge compared to the first but things like the explosions and characters look the same, while trees look horrible from a distance and the water doesn't even look fully animated at times. The cartoony look was still maintained but could have been a little more detailed or polished. It's not horrible like some games, but just not what I wanted or expected.
Dang it! You sunk my battle station!!
Gameplay is the same as the first. The Wii remote functions are few and far between and don't really add much to the experience. In the game, you command a unit of foot soldiers, navel and air units and vehicles. You can switch between your units at anytime during the battle. Basically the general tells you what to do by indicating them (indicating what?) with gold and silver stars. It's all very basic but I love this mechanic. It's fun, simple and very, very enjoyable. The units basically go off a rock, paper, scissors type of things. Anti-air beats air, sea beats land and so on and so forth. It's much more complicated than that but you get the idea. Pointing and shooting with the remote doesn't really add to the game, but it does help simplify things a bit. Overall, nothing's new from the first.
The X army sure is a tough one....
The music in the game is awesome, but too much of it is the exact same as the music from the first. It kinda ticks me off that they couldn't even put a little effort into it. The sounds of the game are pretty good and corresponded well with all of the things on-screen. Something that I have come to love are the little cartoony sounds that the infantry units make. Such as "Oh no... here we go!" and "Looks like we got ourselves a fire fight!". Overall really good but almost nothing new...
"Come fly away! Come fly away with me!"
The online mode is were this game truly shines. There are three types of gameplay that can be played ether with a friend or anyone willing to take you on. Co-Op, skirmish, and assault. Co-op is the most disappointing if only by a hair. Only because it's not the actual Campaign that you play in the single player mode. They are just random missions that you and someone have to work on. They are good but not as good as most of the single player missions. Second reason co-op was disappointing was because there is no voice chat. It's hard to tell someone you are getting pounded by a bomber when all you can say is "This unit needs assistance!" with the 2 button. Skirmish is basically an all out brawl where the player with the most points wins. You gain points through killing your opponent. The larger the unit the harder it falls. And finally we have assault in which one person defends a point, and the other has to capture it. This is pretty deep and very fun. I would say that assault is by far my favorite out of an already awesome online mode.
