Microsoft has Xbox 360 Blu-ray drives ready to go
X-bit Labs is not only reporting that Microsoft is still planning on releasing an external Blu-ray drive, but also that the company already has the device ready to go.
According to the article, Toshiba (yes, you read that correctly) and Samsung have been asked to come up with the external Blu-ray solution for the Xbox 360. Rumors are also floating around claiming a $100-to-$150 price point.
With Blu-ray playback remaining as one of the few advantages the PlayStation 3 has over the Xbox 360, one would imagine Microsoft would want to release this immediately to level the Blu-ray bragging rights issue.
If this information is accurate, we're left wondering how Microsoft will play this. Do they try and get this out in time for the holidays? Or do they wait to debut it at a show (like CES) where we're likely to see standalone Blu-ray players fall in price anyway?

This is intersting stuff. I look forward to seeing how this all unfolds.

I don't think Microsoft will put it out this generation. Most likely they'll have a Blu-Ray disc player internally on the next Xbox so they can keep up with storage requirements.
Still, it wouldn't surprise me a bit if they were to release one. It would make the competition even rougher for Sony (assuming it was a good price and not a POS)

nah, I think they will. If they put out the drive and the combined price of it and the console is less than that of the PS3 then they'll be able to win some of the people that just want to watch movies and play the odd game or two.

RE: Microsoft has Xbox 360 Blu-ray drives ready to go

Once again, amid recent rumors stemming from a report by Xbit Labs, Microsoft has stepped in to deny that they are working on an external Blu-ray drive for the Xbox 360. Speaking to Major Nelson during a TGS podcast,, Aaron Greenberg director of product management for Xbox 360, reiterated the company's belief that the future is digital by citing their recent deal with Netflix and stating that they will not "force" gamers to purchase a product that they do not want.
As transcribed by Videogaming247:
"We believe that we shouldn't force people to pay for things they don't want. We also believe that the future's digital, and that's why we've invested in a massive library of entertainment content, that's why we're bringing things like Netflix to members in the U.S., that?s why we're growing our library in Europe, that's why we're adding all types of entertainment experiences around the world."

i just wanted an excuse to use that pic, but i agree with d4rk. once the price of the console and add-on are cheaper than a ps3, they'll pull one out.

"We believe that we shouldn't force people to pay for things they don't want."
How can Microsoft say that when we're forced to pay over-bloated prices for 360 HDDs?

I think it was a lot like how Sony forced people to get Blu-ray players with their PS3s...

Yeah, the HD-DVD, HDD, and WiFi adapter were options for the 360... you could get a much cheaper version of the 360 if you wanted one without the extras.

I guess your right. Making the consumer pay $130.00 for a 120gb HDD (amazon) is comparable to giving people a HD movie player in a system. BTW kindrik, is Sony and Nintendo putting standard WIFI into their game systems also shoving technology on the consumer, because Microsoft didn't do that either?

Calm down, he was just making a valid point. However I don't think you see it, I do though. The PS3 kinda did force the BluRay player onto players by having it in the PS3 and by using BR discs as their game format. They didn't *need* to do that. Especially when back then it was a war between BR and HD-DVD.
