RE: Mod chip questions
If you put a little work in, I believe you could convert a WiiKey to a contact-only mod.
But I haven't looked into it, so take it with a grain of salt

RE: Mod chip questions
I feel Mod Chips are pointless now. Nintendo are seriously locking people out now. You can't even access the settings menu with certain chips

That's only because they disable the way it was emulated using a bootable config disc (using a certain Gamecube boot ability), so it's only a matter of time before those modchip companies find an alternate way. The chips, however, still work without having to access the settings menus in being able to play imports (assuming it is enabled by default) and backups.
Nintendo hasn't figured out a way to lock out Wii's using the chips directly.

RE: Mod chip questions
Anyone think that a softmod of some sort would be possible?

RE: Mod chip questions
It's very doubtful, just because the part that is modified by a chip is the optical drive, not exactly the Wii itself. From what I believe, the chip simply overrides (or emulates) the security measures that the drive takes before reading a disc (from copy protection or region coding). The Wii itself never makes these decisions, and thus receives the same information from a chipped drive playing a backup as it would from a non-chipped drive reading an original. This is probably a large reason that Nintendo hasn't figured out a way to outright block mod chips from operating.

RE: Mod chip questions
I don't believe so unless you try to update your U.S. Wii using a Japanese update or something.

SSBB - 5069-3654-7609 (MBX)

That's them trying to scare you more than likely. Ask around though if you feel unsure. My Wii is modified as well as some others on here. As for me, so far so good.

RE: Mod chip questions
Yeah, anytime a "big" game comes out Nintendo usually has an update. Never update when you first see one available. Wait for others to try and see if it "breaks" anything before updating and you should be ok.

RE: Mod chip questions
If you're looking just to play imports then the new Freeloader is the safer way to go because even if it gets blocked your console is still good.

RE: Mod chip questions
I doubt it could could corrupt the Wii system itself, although they can cause problems (I've been there/ done that) you can always disable them (software wise). I would suggest getting one of the newer modchips other than Wiikey, despite it being great, it outdated and has caused me some grief over getting my real copy of Brawl to work.

RE: Mod chip questions
Wiikey isn't bad, but their main website has not been up since last year and that raises concern. Cylowiz has been received well, but of cause there is this fantastic comparison chart. All I recommend is you get someone who knows what they are doing to install it.
