Mr.Luben Reviews Legend of the Mystical Ninja

Mr.Luben Presents
Review of
Legend of the Mystical Ninja

Ninjas. What would we do without them? Were would the Super Nintendo Entertainment system be without them? Were would all of video games be without them?! Ninjas are some of the best people to be in video games. Whether it is on a retro system or a nice shiny PS3, they are always fun to play with. So, when I heard that The Legend of the Mystical Ninja was coming to the Virtual Console, I knew that some good old fashion ninja fun was headed my way. But dose the old game still have its fun and colorful ninja fun? Or should ninja fans just avoid this game overall? Well, you will find out in this review of The Legend of the Mystical Ninja.

Story

First off, you are Goemon. You are being trained as a ninja and are about ready to go off on your own. That’s when you are given an quest to do. The reason for Goemon's big quest is a girl. The quest is to save the kidnapped Princess Yuki, and though the plot seems pretty old and standard, the game presents it so well that you can't help but love Goemon's world. Cut scenes are illustrated vividly, with large, comical characters and tons of great personality that will just steal hours away! The translations from Japanese to English are kind of lame, – Goemon is referred to as "Kid Ying" – but all of the other elements are there.

Graphics

With many SNES games becoming more and more beautiful, Mystical Ninja had to really step up to the plate. Well, that’s exactly what it did. The graphics are by far best part about the game. Clean, attractive, well-animated cut scenes and great environments make the game come alive. Everything you could ever love about retro SNES graphics are here.

Gameplay

The Legend of the Mystical Ninja is an action/adventure title that's built to blend two different styles of gameplay. The first is most similar to games in the beat-em-up brawler genre were you would simply go around beating on enemies with a lot or going in shops as you explore towns. Second is the more platforming style, when you venture into strictly 2D side-scrolling stages that play in a way reminiscent of other Konami franchises like Contra and Castlevania.  It’s great how the game combines the two to make one really great game to play.

Controller wise, this game works great with the classic controller because the classic controller was kind of stylized after a SNES controller anyways! The controls work well with everything and it’s easy to maneuver through the levels while still attacking!

The points at were this game really shines in gameplay is the Co-op play. Its fun to play this game alone, buts its even better when there is someone along side you to play with. There are even some tag team moves that are possible to pull off.

Music

While this music is based on ancient Japanese style, it dose add to the already great ninja experience! Spectacular sound design and background music that adds aural appeal to Goemon's world, it would be hard to find anything this good in the rest of the SNES library as good as this game.

Story—9/10—Its easy to fall in love with this story
Graphics—10/10—Some of the best on the SNES possibly
Gameplay —8.8/10—Good gameplay that is always fun with a friend
Controls —910—Great controls with the Classic controller
Music—10/10—Awesome music that adds to the already great ninja experience
Lasting Appeal—9/10—Its always fun to play the game with a friend!
Overall—9.2/10—A great ninja game. Enough said right there…

Get this game?
If you are at all a ninja fan, then this is a great game for you!!
