PS3 Helps cure Cancer.
Re-doing [Me]'s thread.
PS3 helps search for cancer cure.
And my replay to this thread.
More hype for the PS3! +1 for Sony.
People want games, not help scientists. -1 Sony.
Although, this is for the greater good! Cure for Cancer! +1 Sony.
Although, leaving your console on wastes energy, causeing pollution, which in its turn causes global warming. And it lowers the life of your console, and increases your electrical bill. - 2 for Sony.
Moral? Make games! Not another useless feature for a GAMING console.
We buy these consoles for games... not these added features. Which actually have a worse outcome then anticipated, Global Warming!

Still need to fix contrast/brightness, and text could use a makeover.
FIX'D!

I would disagree. You can run Linux on the PS3, to make it work like a computer. Folding@home has a stable 5.02 Linux build for the program in question, so I see no reason why it couldn't run it.
I also don't see why Jostiq would post something fake.

RE: PS3 Helps cure Cancer.
I think [me]'s joke was in his thread that, when you type in 'PS3 cures cancer' in Google, it says "did you mean... 'PS3 causes cancer'"

PG13 reply Spoiler: (hover to reveal the text)
If the PS3 cures cancer then the Wii causes orgasms and with a wireless Wiimote with rumble anything can happen.

RE: PS3 Helps cure Cancer.
Did you NOT go to the MOD/ADMIN Wiiloaded conference in Munich?
we can be PG13 mama, so orgasm is probably ok, but I appreciate the mystery in it all.
*I think the ability to do this is cool, but I also think it will give more people the opportunity to make fun of the PS3 and joke about how they'll be able to go online and play cards, but play a half way decent PS3 games is months and months away.
*this isn't my view, but I can see where some might say this.

I'm hoping that was meant to be Mana, otherwise I can see the nightmares coming tonight!
On Topic: I think the PS3 is trying to spread itself too thin. Much like the PSP, the PS3 is trying to be too many things at once and what people want the most out of it is gaming and that doesn't seem to be what they are focusing on. As for the PS3 really curing cancer see my previous post (if u dare!)

RE: PS3 Helps cure Cancer.
Like I mentioned in response to Cloud's post...
Since PS3 can run linux, then anything that runs on linux should work on the PS3. It isn't Sony doing anything in particular, just people doing stuff with what Sony has given us
sorry mana for the mama comment, but it's better then mommy...

RE: PS3 Helps cure Cancer.
sure no prob. when there's redundant information, it's always good to merge it if at all possible. since you had video which hadn't been shown on here, I asked for this to be done instead of just locking your post

RE: PS3 Helps cure Cancer.
PS3 doubles Folding@home power
More than 250,000 of you have allowed your PlayStation 3 to contribute processing power to the Folding@home project, the PS3 version of which has been active for just one month.
Stanford University's research now enjoys a computing power of 700 teraflops in a single moment, 400 of which are delivered by PS3 owners. The console has also helped bring recognition to the scheme, boosting the number of PCs actively contributing by 20 per cent.

"The PS3 turnout has been amazing, greatly exceeding our expectations and allowing us to push our work dramatically forward," said Vijay Pande, associate professor of Chemistry at Stanford University and Folding@home program lead.
"Thanks to PS3, we have performed simulations in the first few weeks that would normally take us more than a year to calculate. We are now gearing up for new simulations that will continue our current studies of Alzheimer's and other diseases."
Those of you with a PS3 can also download a new update for the software. The 1.1 version improves visibility of donor locations on the globe, folding calculation speed and protein viewing. There's also additional language support, help screen hints, and improved donor-name length and character handling.
You can join the program by clicking on the Folding@home icon in the PS3 CrossMediaBar (XMB), or you can set the application to run whenever your console is idle.
The Folding@home project allows you to join the race to understand protein-folding, misfolding and related diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, cystic fibrosis and various cancers.

RE: PS3 Helps cure Cancer.
You know what would be cheap? If this folding@home stuff was all some cheap scheme made up by Sony to leave your PS3's on for long periods of time, causing them to overheat and making you buy a new one... of course that probably isn't true.
I never understood how this program actually works anyways
