PS3 SPOTLIGHT ON: Calling all cars

By Mr.Luben on April 20th, 2007

Calling all cars!

Remix video here!!

In the world of video games today, one can download small games onto the consoles hard drive for a small fee. Sony's Play Station 3 currently has several games on their online store. Blast Factor and flOw are just a few of the titles for sale today, but what looks to be the best of the bunch is just around the corner.

Calling all Cars is one such title that is currently in production at Sony's Santa Monica Studios and is perhaps best known because of the involvement of David Jaffe. The game is very simple. It follows a cops and robbers type of style where one must pick up criminals in your car and deliver them to jail for points. Controlling your vehicle is all managed by the left analog stick. There's no gas button as you drive in whatever direction you press, but R2 will give a bit of nitro should you have some saved up. The only other control you need to use is R1 which will use one of the level's weapons to help you free the criminal from another car so that you can snag him up yourself. It, in a weird way, is alot like football.

Speaking of weapons, there are many weapons spread through out the levels labeled as question marks to always keep you guessing  as to what weapon you will receive. A single rocket attaches to the front of your car and fire straight ahead at a quick pace when you unleash its deadly mass. The hammer allows you to pound the ground to shake up cars around you, though you only get one use per pickup. A magnet can be used to  rip the criminal from someone else's clutches. Should you not happen to have a weapon in your hands, you can simply ram other cars at high speed to shake loose their package. Once you nab the criminal, you're on the defensive because you can't use any weapons until you either lose him or deliver him to jail. Even though you can't die in Calling all cars, you do loose points for falling off the level. And don't forget that every point counts.

Scoring points is done by running your car through one of the 3 gates of the jail. The one pointer gate is quite simple and easy to get it. The two pointer is some what harder. In one level for instance, the two pointer gate may be only accessed by jumping a ramp and flying through the gate. The three pointer gate is the hardest to get into. In example, you must time it right to get your car of a moving ramp. Another scenario is when a train is going by and a ramp is one of the cars. You must time it perfectly right to get off the jump and through the gate.

As I said before, the game can feel a lot like football. Once you have one of the criminals, you need to steer clear of the other cars and find the quickest and safest route to the goal. If you don't have the bad guy, and someone else does, it's all about ramming them and taking him back. When three cars are hot on the tail of another and everyone is running about to pick up the loose crook, things could get really hectic!

So, keep your eyes open for this crazy pick up and play game. It is avalible on the PS3 store now. Hope to see you there!

Great job on this SLO. The graphics in this game look really different, but in a cool way. Any word on it's release date?

Closing Comments

"Aside from the limited number of maps, we have absolutely no complaints about the game's multiplayer. It practically defines "action-packed" and will force even silent gamers to start talking trash and scream at their TV. While the single-player portion is far from perfect, the multiplayer is extremely fun and makes Calling All Cars the best game on the PlayStation Network."
