Questions regarding component cables, VGA connections

Component Cables:

Currently, this is what my wii setup is:

I use these cables:

With these jacks:

So my question is, how much better picture would I get using these cables:

With these jacks:

VGA Connection

Would I be able to hook up these cables:

With this port on the back of my laptop (to play my Wii using my laptop screen):

(keep in mind there is no place to hook up those red and white cords to)

RE: Questions regarding component cables, VGA connections

The component cables will greatly enhance your wii viewing pleasure </brochure speak>

Yeah, brighter, more vivid colors.

And yes @ the VGA cables. The red and white could be plugged into a mic jack of any soundcard using some radio-shack adapters, or if you have a tuner?

RE: Questions regarding component cables, VGA connections

Hannnnng on there.

Components (the upgrade) vs Composites (what you currently use) will give you a night and day difference with the Wii.

Hooray for mouseovers http://www.gamespot.com/features/6162297/p-2.html

You'll get the most difference if your TV supports progressive scan (if it has those ports, it probably does) and even more screen space if you have 16:9.

It's amazing to me to switch back to composite occasionally (to record video on my computer) because the quality is soooo terrible in comparision.

the VGA port on your lappy is 99% likely to be an OUTPUT, not input, so check first.

Even with my TV, which is only SDTV?

Since my tv is 4:3, does that mean stuff will get cut off? Or will it still all fit in there?

So... does that mean it wouldn't work? (and how do I find out if it is output or input?)

RE: Questions regarding component cables, VGA connections

SDTV usually means 480i. In other words, you won't be able to get 480 progressive scan, but you should still see a difference, just not as much. Considering you can find them in stores occasionally for $10, they are still worth it. To get the most out of your Wii, you don't necessarily need an HDTV (720p/1080i/1080p), but at least an EDTV (480p).

If your TV is 4:3, simply leave it in full screen mode. Nothing will be cut off, it will be the same aspect you play now. If your TV was 16:9, you can change the settings in the menu, it doesn't automatically change with these cables.

You could double check the monitor plug on the lappy by plugging it into a monitor. If the monitor comes on, it's an output. Again, I'm almost positive it's an output (considering I've never seen a laptop with an input, and every laptop I've seen has an output). If it is an output, then no, it will not work, and it's only made to output video, not receive it.

Hmm Ok, but with most monitors, it is input right?

RE: Questions regarding component cables, VGA connections

not sure what sort of adapters you would need. A female > female cable to go between the two male connectors from the monitor and the wii.

RE: Questions regarding component cables, VGA connections

Alrighty. the output of your wii is male. The end of the cable from the monitor is male. Therefore, you need a woman to take it from both ends. Toungue

something like that.

you might want to get confirmation from joker or d4rk though. haha

lol.

Video isn't as straight forward as audio couplings, which I deal more with.

I'd say...83% sure or so. How much does that wii>vga cable cost?

to tell you the truth, my vga port looks exactly like the one you posted (female), does that mean it is input?

Yep.

Could you post a link to that Wii>VGA though? My tv's are in high demand in my house, but I have 2 22" monitors lying here doing nothing.

RE: Questions regarding component cables, VGA connections

A wii VGA cable will let you use a standard monitor as a "tv", but it won't let you use the laptop screen as a tv, as it's exceptionally rare for a laptop to have an "input" (only output).

EDIT: BTW, I have no idea where you get Wii VGA cables, since I've never actually seen them, but if I read the image's filename correctly, it's actually a Wii DVI cable, which makes things more complicated. That means you need a newer, nicer monitor with a DVI plug (assuming it's for a PC's DVI) or a TV with a DVI plug (which means it's older model HDTV most likely, as newer ones use HDMI instead). There are different flavors of DVI so I would need more information on the cable posted to be able to say anything with certainty.

Alternatively, a TV tuner for the PC will let you play the Wii using standard cables (or components, depending on how nice the tuner is)

RE: Questions regarding component cables, VGA connections

So Is my laptop input or output? Or do you just want me to get the link I bought it from at circuitcity (I dont' know if its still there)

If it helps, it is an Acer Aspire 5100-3357

Output. it will not accept video, but you can use a monitor as a primary/secondary screen for the laptop.

RE: Questions regarding component cables, VGA connections

I just looked it up... those are NOT VGA or DVI cables, they are d-terminal cables (japanese components), as we reported before the wii was released (usually virtually the same picture but rotated)

I can't really look up the news article now because the new skin doesn't have the portal coded yet and I'm too lazy to swtich the skin back. It should be somethign about offical wii accessories and it should be before Nov 06.

RE: Questions regarding component cables, VGA connections

Yes. It's really not that unusual. Most computer cables made to connect two things are double male ended. Most computer extension cables are male/female.
