Resident Evil 5 to sport Gears inspired controls

"Today, team Capcom just announced some interesting Resident Evil 5 information regarding the game's control scheme. More specifically, they're looking to overhaul the current RE5 control formula by replacing the classic stop and shoot mechanic with a more Gears inspired cover system. What's the reason? RE5 producer Jun Takeuchi feels that the cover system controls will slow down the tension and bring a new horror element into the mix. Expect to see a completely new RE5 unveiling during the Tokyo Game Show in October."

Hmm, This could go either way. If they do a good job then this could okay. But if they don't get it just right, then it might end up feeling like Dark Sector did, clunky as hell. Let's hope they don't screw this up...

RE: Resident Evil 5 to sport Gears inspired controls
I reckon new Sony console will be unveiled about 2012-2013, released late 2014. New xbox will be unveiled about 2011 and released christmas 2012. The new Nintendo console will just be a puppy.

I like the idea. I don't want the same rehashed RE4 controls on a "next-gen" system.

But RE4 had great controls. I'd rather have so-called 'rehashed' controls than controls that might not work as well.
Besides, if it's based off Gears wouldn't that also make it a rehash.

It had great controls when you compared it to other RE games and consider it's on the PS2. Playing it now is ****ing frustrating. I played it about 3 months ago to see what the hype was and couldn't have been more disappointed. Let's completely disregard what I said though and focus on the fact that you're basing your opinion off of something that might not work. That in itself doesn't really deserve anymore explanation or thought, so I'll leave it at that.
If they copied Gears to a "T" then sure it'll be a rehash, but according to you RE4 had great controls, and according to many so did Gears. RE4 + Gears = rehash? I thought when you combine two different things it makes something new.

RE: Resident Evil 5 to sport Gears inspired controls
It might work, as RE is descending into Gears-style territory (ie. not horror or even survival based). And by that I mean it's entering the shoot bad guys and don't worry about surviving, you'll get enough ammo and such to keep you alive.
Edit: RE4's control scheme worked like a charm on the GCN control (ie. the console it was originally developed for).

RE: Resident Evil 5 to sport Gears inspired controls
A cover system is meant for fast paced battles...
So we take cover and wait 3 minutes for the zombies to finally turn a corner?
The parts where the zombies where actually close enough to attack you is when you turned a corner and a zombie broke thrugh a wall beside you and attacked. Cover system doesn't sound like it'd work.
Well, of course it'd work. But it'd make it less creepy, and more of a "wait it out" sniper battle.
Or they could actually make it work by giving the zombies/mind controlled folk guns, and make them faster.. but then we'd just be playing GoW with a RE4 texture mod over it.

RE: Resident Evil 5 to sport Gears inspired controls
RE seems to be steering away from being creepy. No doubt heading for the Action genre... woo...

RE: Resident Evil 5 to sport Gears inspired controls
there was nothing creepy about RE4.
the more i see this game, the less im interested. i dont feel like playing a "survival horror action" game... so it makes sense that they'd tweak the controls to a more action oriented scheme like Gears.

It depends, is the new something homogeneous?

RE: Resident Evil 5 to sport Gears inspired controls
The Resident Evil franchise is just evolving to mimic the general population's game choices, like it or not (in my case, not, as it's destroying what res evil originally was--creepy as hell. The kind of game you didn't want to play alone and/or at night).
I think what they're trying to do is create tension by overwhelming you, rather than surprising you like they used to. The games are becoming more like the first movie--a little scary because you're surrounded. Meh.
Also, those are some big ****ing tomatoes. Genetically modified organisms, anyone? The villagers ate them, they mutated, and now Chris is stuck fighting off super-human veggies? (or are they fruits?!?! You can only find out by beating the game!)
