Exclamation  SPOTLIGHT ON: MOTORSTORM

created by: Mr Luben on 03-14-07

In spite of the bad buzz that's been surrounding Sony since the PS3 pricing was unveiled last May at E3, the company has managed to deliver a solid first-party title around which to anchor its hardware at launch, and now, as spring arrives, another fairly solid title is landing. MotorStorm has been hyped quite a bit since the first videos of flying vehicular damage showed up a year and a half ago. Evolution Studios' take on the off-road racer is indisputably one of the best-looking games on the system, but after a few days of play we're kind of on the fence regarding the game play.

REVIEW VIDEO

That the tracks are just as excellent looking is really saying something. Again, there are only eight of them, but each one is a long, drawn-out trek through one form of desertic hell or another, and they're all a treat to look at.

ONLINE GAME PLAY VIDEO

Motorstorm has some of the most impressive lighting effects you've seen in a racing game to date, and depending on the time of the day, the sun is either completely washing out a barren wasteland or coloring a beautiful landscape with gorgeous oranges and reds. Even the distant mountains and hills in the background look excellent, though it's the up-close pieces of the track that really impress. Dirt and mud fly everywhere, deforming the track itself in the process, and many of the pieces of junk littered about the track can break or be otherwise moved.

BACK AND CRASH GAME PLAY

Motorstorm's audio is also pretty great. On the track, engines have a ferocious roar to them, and every time you wreck into something, the booming, crunching sounds of the crash really make you feel it. While you race, you get one of several rock or techno songs from major artists like Nirvana, Queens of the Stone Age, Wolfmother, Spiritualized, and Slipknot, among others. It's a diverse soundtrack that always manages to fit the vibe of the overall game, in that every song heightens the intensity of a race in one way or another.

RE: SPOTLIGHT ON: MOTORSTORM

I've only seen this game played as a demo, but it also looked really fast and frantic. I would expect it to be very popular for the PS3 crowd.

RE: SPOTLIGHT ON: MOTORSTORM

The game looks cool, however the video I saw last week was misleading to me.

I say this because I've been wanting a new and awesome Road Rash title for a long time now, and one of the first thing you see in the Motorstorm vid are motorcycles punching and kicking.

Cool looking game, but I boo Sony for how misleading the video is in the beginning. I was very excited AT FIRST, now not so much.
