Seniors Go Wild For Wii

I'm sure everyone can agree that Nintendo has truly captured the casual audience this generation. One of their main goals was to bring gaming "back to the masses" and Nintendo certainly achieved that goal. Since the launch of the Wii, strange stories have spread across the internet about how the Wii has made its way into old people's homes, hospitals etc. All the places that you wouldn't really expect to see a video game console.

The latest story comes from Riverton Elks Lodge, where the Wii has become a huge hit! Melanie Melsted, Riverton’s senior resource coordinator, started bringing her own Wii to the lodge for the seniors to enjoy. Soon enough the seniors loved the Wii so much that they decided to buy one for the lodge. “Once they learned how to use it they wanted me to keep bringing it back,” Melsted said. “This is a great way for seniors to interact and keep active.”

Wii Sports is one of the many games that allow the seniors to take part in activities that would usually require them to go outdoors; like bowling, golf, baseball, boxing (granny punch out anyone?) and tennis. Although this is just one of the many splendid ways Nintendo has taken the casual audience by storm, it's refreshing to look at how the Wii has redefined gaming.

Finally got around to finishing my two WiiWare launch games this week, My Life as a King and LostWinds. I really enjoyed them both and had (almost) no regrets in the end. Here’s some quick impressions of both games.

I bet there'll be a lot of broken bones while swinging that Wii remote around.
