Sony: console competitors have a tough road ahead

“In the next few years, you’re going to start to see us separate from the herd. Some of the other platforms are going to look very dated because their life spans are so much shorter than ours. If you’re a competitor I’ve got bad news for you because we’ve got some absolute blockbusters that are in the works, some of them new IP, some of them existing IP, that we’re building specifically for the PS3. From a competitive standpoint our competitors are going to have a tougher road now then even in 2008. But for PlayStation 3 consumers, it means more quality and more choice.” - SCEA’s VP of product marketing Scott Steinberg

That's a very bold statement.

Who thinks agrees with him? Who thinks what he said is a load of crap?

I'm kind of on the fence. Although, I do agree with "some of the other platforms are going to look very dated".

I am also very much "on the fence" with this too.

RE: Sony: console competitors have a tough road ahead

lol, since it's coming from Sony, I'm leaning towards it's all a load. They've dug a deep hole, and it's going to be hard to climb out of it.

I would like to believe it's true, but how many times have gaming companies (not just Sony) promised blockbusters and delivered the equivalent of straight to dvd quality?

RE: Sony: console competitors have a tough road ahead

Yeah, sorry, by the time the PS3 distances itself from the herd, the cattle will have been swapped for newer, better cattle.

IE the next generation of systems.

I never said the PS3 was bad... quite the contrary, the hardware build quality surpasses that of the other two consoles. Of course, the experience is why people purchase video game systems, and people just aren't getting that with the PS3. 360 is entrenched and gaining popularity due to snowballing and expanding the types of titles. The Wii has a unique approach that was been wildly successful. The PS3 offers more of what we saw last time around, but better. That's just not enough this time around.

RE: Sony: console competitors have a tough road ahead

I think it's funny how console gamers these days don't care to get value out of their systems. I'm happy to own a PS3, because I know it will be supported long after MS and Nintendo decide to move on to something else. I like getting value for my money, and since I enjoy playing the PS3 games, haven't had to send my system in to be repaired, and know that there will be AAA titles coming for the PS3, I'm happy with my choice.

Those who complain about Nintendo's software line-up (and for good reason) or those who are still smitten with their 360 even after having to send it in for repair numerous times may see things differently, but that's ok.

i wonder if it's even possible for you to comment on something without having to quickly become defensive and bring up other consoles. you'd be perfect as a sony PR.

the way i see it, when youre in 3rd place, you really have no industry pull. developers will look at what is selling and create games for that console as priority. something else to consider is the software tie ratio which i guess is related to the console sales. isnt that how the PS2 became such a powerhouse?

not every game created will utilize every inch of storage or hardware tech. it's still a long way before the definitive 3rd party titles are released on the ps3 first while others get hacked ports/iterations. until then, they can only rely on new 1st party IPs.

...his statement read more like one to reassure current owners of their purchase. it's interesting to note because in any other industry, companies dont take the time to send out statements to their customers. i feel a little privileged. maybe im not looking in the right places. i gotta see if samsung let me know i bought the right tv.

RE: Sony: console competitors have a tough road ahead

Sony has done a lot of talking in the past three or four years but rarely delivers to an extent where I'm inclined to believe them. Longevity doesn't mean a whole lot until there is better quality associated with it. Now don't get me wrong, there is a decent amount of quality software available for the PS3 and even more coming out, but IMO still lags well behind the Xbox 360, and still not enough to justify the fact that it is still the most expensive console currently on the market.

If the PS3 is going to start "separating itself from the herd", I think it is too late for it to have a major impact on the final tally for this hardware generation. They might want to catch up to the herd first. I don't really understand the "other platforms are going to look dated" comment either. All consoles will look dated once the next generation arrives. Not to mention that the Wii would have looked dated in 2004 nevermind 2009 and beyond.

This is not a hate-on for the PS3, but we've heard this type of cocky drivel regarding the PS3 dripping from Sony's mouth for years now and they rarely have any real substance.

I kind of thought the thread was created to get everyone's opinion, so I don't apologize for giving mine.  We can't all be drones to some corporation, so if MS or Nintendo had a solid well-built system and promised amazing titles which would span 10 years, I'd be congratulating them too, but right now Sony is the only one making the claim and the way they supported the PS2 makes it clear that they are willing to do just that. Can we not attack gft77 for being a Sony fan? He's got a right to his opinion just the rest of you knuckleheads. So he said something you don't agree with. He's allowed to say it.

But gft77 remember, they're allowed to express their disdain for your opinion. People often get defensive when you're reaching the truth. Know this well. Wink

whether i agree with it or not isnt the point. it's funny you mention becoming defensive when reaching the truth, because gft quickly brings up the 360's hardware faults whenever anything negative is posted. if the article had touched on that, i wouldnt have had a problem. unfortunately, it seems like bad habits are hard to break for some people.

Never sent my 360 back for repair once.
Best value for money system on the market today IS the 360,
1/3 the price of the PS3.

When sony say, other platforms are going to look 'Dated', what he means to say is that by the time microsoft's and ninty's next console is out, the ps3 will be looking very very dated.

It's all well and good having the hardware, but if your not doing anything with it . just like ninty, then eventually the customers are going to catch on.

I Like getting value for money, which is why i didn't buy a ps3 (it was bought as a present for me.)

I have noticed however, i still by far find my self enjoying my 360 over my ps3, there just doesn't seem to be the amount of decient games on sony's offereing over micro$ofts.

RE: Sony: console competitors have a tough road ahead

While we're on this topic... I keep hearing people say that the PS3 is going to have a phenomenal holiday season and that there are a bunch of killer apps coming to it. I even hear a large number of people saying it's going to beat out the 360. Maybe I missed something, but what are the big exclusives it's getting? LBP and Resistance 2? Is there something else I'm missing? Because if that's it, then they are SCREWED. I'm writing this as a non-partisan owner of all three current gen consoles: How are those two exclusives expected to go up against Fable 2, Gears 2, Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts (however you feel about that one, you KNOW it's gonna sell boat loads), Left 4 Dead, and so on? Beyond that, all of the other great games coming out are gonna be cross platform, and given the much larger 360 install base, I don't think it's hard to see where more of the money is gonna go.

I'm skeptical Sony.

If you think that Microsoft has a 10 year plan for the 360 then I'd be happy to admit that I'm wrong. What you failed to point out with your comments though was that I didn't single out the 360, but also commented on the Nintendo Wii also. At some point you need to stop pointing your finger at everyone else to call them a fanboy and look over the comments you write. Then maybe you can see how many of us don't exactly see you as being impartial.

here's steinberg's full statement:

he's pretty much giving the same old sales pitch we've heard from other VP's in the past.

cough* splutter* rotflmao*

ehem

i like what you did there, but

We all know the 360 isn't a 10 year console, and only sony and there diehard's think that the ps3 is.

Sure the ps2 has almost a 10 year life span, and i'm sure sony will support it to the fullest until that point, also i'm sure the ps3 while becoming dated by the 5 year point will also have a 10 year life span. (read supported for, rather than without a sister console)

I am also sure that sony will release there psMore half way through the ps3's lifecycle if only to compete and keep up with their competetors, to do other wise will be the final nail in the coffin for the present sony entertainment playstation management team, and possibly even the brand.

And as we're adding Ninty into the mix, as soon as the DS's (lite) sales slump, well here comes DS2, and I really wouldn't be supprised if a Nintendo Pu *full HD, HDD solution, Pu-stick plus enabled, with optional VR Home and Friend codes deluxe enabled connect 48 with full backwards compatability and Virtual Virtual console, that is the size of a blue-ray container case, and plays ACC audio files, and painted shiny black, *take breath here* is already near completed development, to be ready for the final realisation of the casual masses that well already have one, no point in buying two, and have that market cornered and saturated.

yeah i forgot my point,
oh yeah, stop fighting you two, it's destracting from the topic. Big Grin

Many people would argue that the Wii has had a poor game line up since their launch, so my quote above was pointed at that system Smile
