Sony's Scott Steinberg: no 'senior citizen' gaming happening here

Like your console gaming experiences hardcore, with nary a Wiimote in sight? The latest from SCEA's Scott Steinberg ought to be music to your ears. In a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Steinberg addressed issues such as future plans for the PS3 and why Sony is uninterested in reeling in the "senior" demographic.

Direct from the interview:

"I think the notion of that controller is a non-trivial point that you've brought up, that control and that familiarity is like comfort food - from my perspective, we lead, we don't follow," he said. "And as a brand, Nintendo's got their thing, and we're not trying to get the senior citizen group to get into gaming, we're looking to convert the PS2 owners and the tens of millions of installed base that were playing DVDs and playing games on their PS2, to now play Blu-ray movies and Blu-ray games with their PS3."

I'm glad Nintendo's doing what they're doing, I really am. It's been tremendously successful for them, and I also like the idea that my parents may come to understand a little of why gaming is so essential to me (and maybe come to like it themselves). On the other hand, I like gaming with a controller that I don't have to wave my arms all over the place to use, and I like games that are directly marketed to me: a gamer that's spent a long time gaming and can understand and enjoy more complex structures. It seems like there's room for both.

Digg!

I personally don't care to see "Murder She Wrote" or "Matlock" games on the PS3 or on any Sony system, so I'm glad they're sticking to their guns on this one.

I still have problems when people say that you're flailing your arms all over the place in Wii games. I've never had to to that...

But yeah I guess Sony would like those, 140 million was it?, PS2 owners to buy a PS3. But the fact is that they're probably not going to while the PS2 is still being supported by both developers and Sony themselves.

RE: Sony's Scott Steinberg: no 'senior citizen' gaming happening here

I think it says something good about Sony how it still supports the PS2 and those people who don't want to go into the current gen market. People like to twist that around and make it seem bad (not referring to you Rooster), but what's wrong with people getting value out of their purchase? I said it in another thread, but I don't want a game system for just 4 years, I want to be playing it and new titles after that period to get my money's worth.

im not sure if they are sticking to their guns or just have their backs against the wall and this is all they have left to do...

first, at $600 they priced themselves out of the gamers sweet spot, and then they marketed technology no one wanted.

and cmon:

"We lead, we don't follow." is that whats been happening for the last 3 years, hows the SIXAXIS working out leader

no, sony shouldnt follow nintendo, find their own way but there is no reason to be dismissive about nintendos incredibly sucessful next gen console.

There's room for both Nintendo and Sony. I've already come to terms with Nintendo's new target and everyone else should as well. I do NOT want to play games that use motion control on my PS3. I actually hate it when games use the sixaxis controls as well. It works with some games but it doesn't with others. I'll play them both for different reasons and that's that.

There's two things I like about Sony here.

1. They are sticking to their guns with the PS3. They're not going like Microsoft, and trying to directly copy the Wii.

2. Supporting the PS2 not only makes those who got it well worth it for their initial investment, but also, it offers a developer supported system for an everyday affordable price. There was always that gap where game systems got more expensive with a new wave, and the titles stopped for the old systems.

(Xbox's last title is actually Madden 09)

When you launch a system and your taking a loss from it's price, there's incentive to have games on the system that are high quality, thus making more people want to buy the system. Nintendo made ~$49 from every Wii console from day 1, and maybe that's why we've seen tons and tons of garbage games, because they don't need to make consistently good games, because they're already making money from the system.

It's not fair to say the PS3 has tech that people don't want. When we were playing NES, we weren't thinking about CD. When we were playing PS1 games, we weren't thinking about DVD. For a company to progress the technology shouldn't be seen as a slight on the gamer, but actually progress. Nintendo has always done things a little different. It wasn't till last gen that they actually used DVD tech (proprietary), but they continue to leave out basics that everyone else has. So Nintendo sticks to it's guns, but in a way that actually hurts the gamers, by not giving them access to a HDD (yet) and not having basics like 5.1 Dolby Digital sound (which should be standard)

In 2007 Sony had it's back against the wall, but 2008 has been very different. I'm glad that Sony isn't trying to tap everyone under the sun to make another cheap game that will outsell the games that are actually high quality. If you want to sit around on the weekends and play Wii sports with your grandma and grandpa, then feel free. That's something I'd rather not do.

I take it you've never played with a sixaxis controller, because it's nothing like a Wii remote.

I have, hell I even played Lair with a sixaxis =/

It may not be like a Wii Mote however, wasn't the PS3 going to use Dualshock but after Nintendo showed the WiiMote then they revealed SixAxis late on and that's why the early launch games didn't take use of the feature.

It's funny you mention lair, wasn't that released like a year ago Smile Unlike the Wii remote, the sixaxis motion controls aren't used very much and are secondary to the standard controls you'd expect from a PS controller.

Yeah, however I used it as a prime example that how since Nintendo when motion controls other developers saw Microsofts Sixaxis as a chance to just go with the motion control they tacked on and look what the out come is! A game ruined by its controls.

Obviously since they had the standard lay out and than added in some extra insides.

You make it sound like Nintendo invented the technology and only they can use it. If that were the case then the Wii and Xbox360 wouldn't be using DVD discs for their games, because the PS2 did it first Smile

IIRC, the Dreamcast had an accessory that was really the first true motion sensing as we know it for home games, and looked almost like a Wii Remote.

I think this is what your referring to sc7

Fishing Rod
A motion sensitive fishing rod was released for the few fishing games on the system. The fishing games for the US Market are Sega Bass Fishing (Get Bass in Japan), Sega Bass Fishing 2 (Get Bass 2 in Japan), Sega Marine Fishing and Reel Fishing: Wild (Fish Eyes Wil in Japan). Lake Masters Pro and Bass Rush Dream was only released in Japan. The fishing rod can actually be used with SoulCalibur and Tennis 2k2 like the Wii Remote.

Heh, it's funny because that controller was wired and used Accelerometers.

Where as the Wiimote is wireless and using more powerful accelerometers as well as optical sensing and is soon to use angular rate sensors.

So I guess the Wii remote being wireless and having "more powerful accelerometers" is suppose to mean that the Wii remote was an original idea. Next you'll tell me that the angular rate sensors is a Nintendo original too?

Everyone copies everyone and tries to make a product better. So we should probably get off our soap box and claim everyone is taking Nintendo's ideas, when in fact Nintendo is simply taking someone elses idea and using it too.

Sixaxis sucks anyway, it's a good thing its not used all the time. It wasn't made to be a massive part of gameplay like the Wii was.

Doesn't change the hilarity of when it was first announced, but sixaxis is still fail.
