RE: The Legend of Zelda: Serenity's Edge
At this point, that's what i make of it; a fan fic. The people at the Career Seminar during the Pitch Your Game Idea segment gave tons and tons of tips and things to pitch an idea for a game that sounds solid. Hopefully this will help you as you work on this, to come up with the most solid game concept you can create.
The main thing about good, solid game ideas is that they can be pitched in two minutes; that's all it should take to have people understand the plot, the controls, the characters, and some gameplay, while also giving the hook to your game that makes it different from the games already out. Either capture their attention and touch on the gameplay, or explain how the gameplay will be something new and amazing. Right now, I don't really see that; just the introduction to the game. And while that is an amazing intro, and you've hooked me with it, it reads more as an intro to a written story than a game.
You're working with the Zelda series, one of the biggest Nintendo series' since its creation. Keep this in mind as you expand on and finalize this, because if you wander too far from the series it won't work as a Zelda game.
I agree with someone else, in that Zelda shouldn't die. If she does, bring her back somehow later in the game; even if its an interactive flashback, or her spirit lingers somewhere or in someone else, it doesn't matter. but if she's killed off and not brought back, this'd be the end of the series. As it is right now, I see this as kind of the "final stand" between good and evil. If Link fails, then evil rules, yet even if he succeeds and brings back peace, there's no leader for the people. Where would they end up, i wonder...

RE: The Legend of Zelda: Serenity's Edge
Honestly, there's little chance of Nintendo actually taking this concept and turning it into an actual Zelda title. In the many years of playing Nintendo games, I've never heard of anything they produced coming from an outsider. Miyamoto pretty much comes up with everything by himself, and his ideas typically come from real life experiences from current days and his child hood. He also prefers the family friendly type of games as we've all seen. Even with Metroid Prime, one of the darkest games to come from Nintendo, there's no blood in the whole game trilogy. If there was, it was very, very, very little. Only blood I remember from a Zelda game was Ganon/Gannondorf caughing up blood at the end of one of the games. Something like this has very little chance of succeeding with Nintendo because it's very Americanised. Americans have the fascination with violence, which is what this game sounds to feature a lot of. Japanese companies and stories, especially from Nintendo, focus on story and gameplay, not the violence, which makes this idea even less likely for a Zelda game.
Now, with all that out of the way, the flip-side. I think the concept otherwise is great. The idea of a fallen hero climbing his way back to greatness makes for amazing stories most of the time. Tales of redemption have a special place is almost everyone's heart because practically all of us have fallen at some point and had to pick ourselves back up. The idea that Link is human, has snapped, and must regain his position of a hero to the people is likely to make for a great full story once you get it fleshed out. As far as problems with the story, you'd have to play with it very carefully. Whether many people see it or not, there really is a time-line to Zelda. If you go into the middle of that and kill off a Princess Zelda (yes, there are more than one), you'll need to make sure the rest of the time-line can continue in someway. Bringing her back to life would solve it, but would that really fit the rest of the feel of the game. She may have had a child before passing and had it hidden away. Maybe she wasn't really dead at all and the Goddesses just put her to sleep so she could awaken when Link finds his true self again and is once again a hero. There are lots of ways to get around it; you just have to make sure it fits the time line and with the game's feel.
So, all in all, I think it could make for a wonderful Zelda game if written out well, but not one Nintendo will make. Honestly, you'd be better off re-desinging it as a new IP and selling/pitching it that way. However, there's always a chance the remarkable can happen. There may be little chance of Nintendo making it when you pitch it, but there's no chance of them making it if you don't pitch it. Good luck with the whole thing though.

RE: The Legend of Zelda: Serenity's Edge
Thanks again for all the input, just to clear a couple of things up, I think I already mentioned it butt there's no way I'm going to pitch this until it's a full story line with game play, environments, side quests etc, it's not like I expect Nintendo to pick this up from 1000 words which in the game would represent about 5 minutes of the opening cinematic. Someone said this sounded more like a story well it does because I wrote it in a novelized format, I'm a filmmaker myself and would have written it in a script format but it would be hard for people who don't understand film to follow it. That being said it's a story version of what I see as a cinematic.
And as for Zelda dying, Nomad already suggested what I had planned, so I'll let you guys try and figure it out

RE: The Legend of Zelda: Serenity's Edge
BTW I forgot to mention that this...
“I AM NOT!” Link roared at Gannondorf’s last word.
...is a big no-no. Link does not talk beyond the usual grunts and screams. Which, I know, raises the difficulty in creating an engaging storyline, but that's just the way it is. That line sounds like he's throwing a hissyfit anyway.

RE: The Legend of Zelda: Serenity's Edge
As much as I used to like Link being a mute... I grow more and more tired of it every day. In fact the only reason I still like him as a mute is because far too many English VAs are just plain terrible.
And as for having everyone but Link speak... they tried that in Corruption having everyone but Samus speak... but in doing that I wanted Samus to have a voice even more.

I'll keep that in mind but I think he might have to talk at some stage in the future! He can't remain a mute forever, but yeah I'll change that bit for now . Oh and Cosmic frog, love the signature

RE: The Legend of Zelda: Serenity's Edge
First let me applaud you for doing this... I've been hoping for something like this for the Zelda series for years. I think a more mature game would be not only beneficial to the franchise but Nintendo as a company as well. I guess my first suggestion is make the game hard... not in it's entirety mind you, but the later portions should present a challenge to veteran gamers; or at least it should have difficulty settings to achieve a similar end. I'm looking forward to your updates.

RE: The Legend of Zelda: Serenity's Edge
I think I will go through from now..because I have nothing else to do to wait for Galaxy. I beat Spiderman 3 This weekend.
Also. Morph ball good job, good concept, but I doubt Nintendo listens to anyone, theres probably a lot of people who try to do things like this but it goes no where. But maybe they will listen if it gets famous around the internets.
This is pretty cool

RE: The Legend of Zelda: Serenity's Edge
The more I think of this, the more I'm thinking it's OK to have Zelda die early on, but she'd have to come back in some form by the end of the game. It is The Legend of Zelda after all.
Or maybe Link gets killed, and then directly after a new boy/Link answers the call to save the world. Plot Twist!!1!
Oooh! Or the game starts from the end, with the final fight being shown in the opening cinematic where Link sacrifices himself to kill Ganondorf and then he wakes up thinking it was all a nightmare.

RE: The Legend of Zelda: Serenity's Edge
Hey Morph... just how far have you fleshed out the game at this point? It would help us if we knew what kind of suggestions you were looking for... ie. plot, gameplay, controls. Also, i'm not sure if this is a big deal or not, but it would seem to me that if all aspects of the game are being discussed online, the final build will be too well known to be a viable game, since the biggest lure to games like this is discovering the secrets that make it unique... thoughts anyone?

RE: The Legend of Zelda: Serenity's Edge
Okay, well in response to mustanglover I don't have heaps on the rest of the game, I have planned out roughly where the game is going but I still want any and every idea that people have so that I can incoporate them. I think you're right that it would be best to keep a lot of things secret so I'm not going to put everything on the net. That being said, I've just made a blog: http://morphball.wordpress.com/ which is where I will put the updates, instead of trying to do it on Wiiloaded, this way you guys can still provide input and I can make updates but it will be more accessible to people outside of WiiLoaded. and as I just said I'm not going to reveal everything, just little bits and pieces here and there.
Now start throwing ideas at me so we can get the ball rolling!

Wow Pretty cool! But i think its a too bloody for Nintendo to accept it, but otherwise its a pretty good concept.
