WTF ever happened to real customer service?

I'm sure everyone has had troubles this holiday season (especially 20 somethings that have to shop for other people for the first time). Well I would like to share a small experience I had when I tried to get my girlfriend a Nintendo DS lite on Thursday. After 2 hours of going from store to store (BB, TRUS, Gamestop, ect...) I find an EBgames that has them in stock and I frequent this EBgames alot. They said they were holding it till 8:00pm and it was 7:30pm, so me and my g/f wait for 30 minutes in the store to see if the person would show up. Around 8:00pm the customer calls the store and asks if they are selling the DS lite they were holding. The guy at the counter said "Yes we are, I'm sorry it's store policy". Well just as soon as I'm about to buy the DS Lite the manager gets another call from the corperate office. Apparently the customer decided to complain to corpoerate about this and as such they weren't allowed to sell me the DS lite. Needless to say I was extremely mad but rather then cause a scene or call corperate myself and waste my time I just left (the store was crowded and I didn't want to look like a complete ass infront of little kids and my girlfriend, plus the manager looked like he'd been through hell). I then went home and wrote a nice letter to EBgames customer service (still no reply... not even a sorry) and ordered the DS lite on amazon.

Now I'm a young guy of 22 and I work hard for a living (yeah no college for me apparently), and the lesson I learned that day was basically even if you follow the rules and are polite, you get shafted. As opposed to not following the rules and causing a huge stink. It really blows my mind how other people can just screw other people this whole holiday season (I was on the front lines weeks earlier to get my Wii). Granted I was taking away a DS lite from a customer however I was perfectly within the rules issued by store policy. The 2nd lesson I learned is I'm never purchasing anything ever again from EBgames,Gamestop, or Barnes & Nobles if they can't even follow their own store policies and screw over patiant/quiet customers.
