Dear Nintendo,

Please do not screw me over with this whole friends list thing. I really want an easy system to use, so I can see which of my friends is online and then point...click...and invite them to a game. I am no longer using my DS as much, and I feel I've grown into the Nintendo Wii and feel that I should be treated as such. Please change this before your online network comes alive.

This first sentence was originally a long string of expletives, but apparently 1UP would fire me, so I'm reduced to simply passing along this sad news: Wii Friend Codes for online play will be title specific. In other words, you need to register every one of your buddies with a new set of random numbers every time you purchase a new game with online connectivity, according to a GameSpy interview with Wii: Definitive Speculation.

GameSpy will be providing the middleware tools for Nintendo and third-parties to bring Wii online.

Falafelkid: Just one last question to make absolutely sure I have got this right, please. If I have a friend roster in one game, that roster will not be available to me in any other game. I have to build up an entirely new list for each title, right?

GameSpy: The answer to your question is yes, for the Wii friend lists are game specific.

Nintendo should send free batteries for the time it's going to take to punch the numbers in. But, will the inevitable hardcore uproar cause Nintendo to change their stance on this? Probably not. They've committed to this format for the Nintendo DS, it hasn't wavered, and all along the company's indicated they'd be following the same philosophy on Wii.

Too bad it's a philosophy that makes online play more frustrating than intuitive.

Hmm, this goes against what was said before. I see flip-flopping. Person A says this and person B says that. I'll tell you what I'm going to do and I suggest that you all do the same thing. Wait for something "Official" from Nintendo and that way will know for sure. Let's hope they give us the answers we seek but I doubt it will be anytime this month or next.

Well that isn't too bad, I mean PS2 friends are title specific, and you have to type in their names. But does anyone know what online will actually be like? will there be 24 person rooms or just small 4 person?

I dunno, but since this came up, then I guess PBR without FC's was not true.

Wait for an offical anouncement from Nintendo!!
Also, if you go to gonintendo.com, (The people who first broke the story) it says "In an informall interview with Gamespy...." That means its not offical yet!

Maybe I'm just old and don't care. But this to me isn't really that important. When I hear people throw fits that they need online gameplay, all I hear is a bunch of spoiled people taking technology for granted.

I'm not saying anyone here is doing that, it's just something I notice across the threads all across the web.

Do something to change them Nintendo. I don't mind having a Universal Friend Code.

you have to remember that the major difference between the Wii and the DS is a hard drive though. the DS HAS to have title specific codes because that's the only place to store the info for the games.

it should be easy for any online game for the Wii to simply search the console's harddrive to find the console's code and friends list on there then use it to access those people online. this just doesn't click right with me

Microsoft did it right with Xbox Live.

Don't get me wrong. I love my Wii, but from the sounds of things (and if all this speculation turns out to be true) I will not be doing much online gaming with it. This, to me, is a real shame since I'd love to play all the Mario sports titles online.

Thankfully, I have my 360 to fuel my online multiplayer hunger. Now it's off to play some co-op Crackdown!

I'll belive it when i see a Formal interview and a person with a real name!

If there's one thing I've seen a lot of with nintendo though, it's the word "should"

so let's not assume =/ though, I for one, am really REALLY hoping for a decent online play..If not, I will fall to my knees and weep like a woman. There's no denying it by this point


Though I used to be a huge online gamer =( I can only hope and PRAY that this will be at least HALF as good as Live...and I know it will do no good...but, PLEASE! SOMEONE! Please let this not be as bad as it seems =/

I really think nintendo knows that DS online sucks (Even though they won't admit it) and that they want to bounce back with a awseome online service on the Wii! I have faith in nintendo. They always pull through!

I think no matter what Nintendo does there is always going to be unhappy people. They should just do what they think is right.

I'm sure they want to, and it would DEFINITELY replenish my faith in Nintendo and what they're doing =) especially with online play

ugh....that sucks!!!

It doesnt really bother me, but I like XBL way better.
