Should we expect Next Gen games to have online game play? When it was recently announced that Metroid 3 for the Nintendo Wii would not have online mulitplayer game play, some people complained, but others brushed the announcement aside as if it didn't matter. How much does it matter though? With the increase of high speed internet throughout the world can game companies keep giving us single player games or do we all need to feel connected to our friends when we're fighting on an alien planet?

I think we should expect more from the game publishers. When they don't deliver on what is the norm, we should hold them accountable and complain. Online multiplayer action has become less the standard but the rule of video games. How long till all the game companies realize that this is the 21st century?
Not all games need online multiplayer. Sure some games demand the need for it but other games can be good without having to play other people. Metroid is a good example of this. The first two were awesome without multiplayer and Corruption will be even awesomer!

Now on the other hand online does extend the life of a video game by a very fair amount of time. It's useful and necessary it most shooters and racing games.

In short, online gaming is an extra. I'd rather developers focus on excellent gameplay and a really long game than a short game that focus entirely on online play.
So are you saying if Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft stopped making Online Multiplayer games then that would be ok, so long as the game had quality 1 player modes?
*still waiting for NinjaRooster to respond.
I think it totally depends on what game it is. Take Mario galaxy for example, that has no reason to have online play. But Redsteel 2 should have online play.

I would like the majority of games have some online funtionalities.
If a game company delays a launch game months and months and gives people the impression that the reason for the delay is because the game will be WIFI, and even has a WIFI symbol on the "box art", then they should deliver,
Name a game that has done that, please. No. Before you go there, Metroid Prime 3 never did. It was all fan driven speculation.
I am glad that you agree LM-X that there is a huge benefit to games being online (if done well). Hopefully in future we'll see more game companies and game systems support this, and not make "promises" they have no intention of keeping.
There is nothing worse than being mislead by a developer. I encourage them to add online to games that should have such features.

i would agree with that...i enjoy multiplayer okay but do not need an online element to make a game or console a success

of course the only real onlne system i have to compare is xbox live 9which i dont care for) so maybe in the future others like sony or nintendo can change my mind

Once again, as long as online doesn't subtract from single player quality.

Single player > Multiplayer.
Well, there should be single player games but there should also be Multi player games

Why hasn't Nintendo made Mario Kart a Multiplayer game is beyond me.

there should be more emphasis on multiplayer for Nintendo and PS3 but there should still be the same drive for quality single player too
Simply put, some games need online, like Pokemon and Mario, and Metroid IMO, and some don't. But yes, bassicly next Gens do need online features.
Metroid doesn't need multiplayer. Nuff' said.
I thought Mario kart does have multiplayer?

your right, it doesn't need multiplayer, but this is 2007 and Nintendo has a system out called the Wii that is suppose to allow for online multiplayer games. Metroid is one of those game that "could" have showcased something special by letting us play death matches or even coop.

Metroid is not a co-op game.

Let Retro make an original FPS game for online.
If you think small then that's what you'll get. After the trilogy is over, what do you expect?

It's cool, but I wonder what you'd be saying if the game was multiplayer online...perhaps just the opposite.
If it was online then cool, as long as it wasn't as glitchy and broken as the Hunters online.

As for after the trilogy is over, who knows. Its up to Nintendo/Retro to decide where Metroid goes now. I hope it stays with its current theme though, its what makes it Metroid.
For someone who has played the original Metroid and had it for the gameboy also, I personally like the harder side-scrolling game. Personally that's the true essence of Metroid, but as technology progresses, so do games.
