generally people get rep'd for being helpful, finding news, going out of their way to help with something. mods are typically get rep'd for being overall nice, helpful and welcoming to members. d4rk gets rep'd for designing a kick-ass website. others get rep'd for saying something funny in OT, and others are rep'd simply for sharing a similar interest, remembering a line from an old movie, or having the same first name. there are contests periodically that reward rep as well, such as the Sig of the Week, or ManaBurnX's weekly OT contests
the first rep i got was from d4rk and simply because i begged him for it. come to think of it, alot of my rep came from begging d4rk. maybe you should try there

Do helpful things for people mainly. They will appreciate it.
