Sony has announced that starting today, the 60GB PS3 will retail for $499, thereby confirming the recent rumors that the machine has dropped by $100 in price. This is exactly what everyone has been waiting for, so if you have yet to pick one up, now's the time. Sony is preparing for a big E3 show, and there are plenty of PS3 games scheduled for 2007 and beyond, so here's your chance, savvy shoppers!
However, if you think you need a little more space, and you want to pick up one of the best PS3 games to date, there's another option for you. A brand new revised PS3 will hit store shelves in August for the U.S. and Canada; it will have a 80GB hard drive and come with a copy of Motorstorm. This very nice bundle will retail for $599. An 80GB PS3 is already in existence in Korea, but it's the only version available in that region, and nobody believed the U.S. would be seeing the 80GB PS3.
Freakin' awesome! Now I'm going to have an easier time getting a PS3! Excellent move by Sony.

Funny how they were saying that it was on a rumor just a while ago and now it's a fact! Well, here's a little more info.
First sources from retailers spoke out about a price cut, now Sony has confirmed that as of Monday, the Sony Playstation 3 60GB model will be priced at $499 USD. The system had originally cost $599 USD, which had damaged the PS3’s potential to outsell the competition from its launch. For $499, the system is still pretty expensive for a “games machine”, but it does include five free Blu-Ray movies (through the Blu-Ray Association). Sony will also be releasing a new 80GB model into the market with a copy of Motorstorm for $599 USD. While this won’t hurt the Wii much, the only caution is to watch and see what Microsoft does as they are expected to bring down their 360 prices such as the Core to $199 USD later this year.

5 free Blu-Ray movies eh? Motorstorm for the $599 one? Choices are there but what do you guys think?
The 80gb model with Motorstorm sounds like a really good deal. I mean you figure a $59.99 game with an extra 20gb of hd...not bad.
I wonder if the "extended warranty" Microsoft is putting on the 360, coupled with it's 1 billion + cost will keep the 360 from a price drop? I'm guessing it won't, but most people will probably be a little scared to purchase the system until they know they won't have to send it back to MS multi times for repairs.
There acting like $499 is a good price =\
Cloud, go back and check out game systems prices in the past. $499 for a PS3 especially with what you get isn't bad. Also, if it makes anyone feel any better, retailers have estimated the PlayStation 3 to have a hardware failure rate of less than 1%.

It's better than what you get for 479 what you get with the elite, or even 399 in the premium 360.
Hmm... depending on E3, Sony could REALLY start selling consoles. I think Microsoft is gonna shine at E3 but Sony now has a chance.
Good job P$3!
so is the $600 model the new tard pack? because only dumbasses would buy this new sku thinking theyre getting a good deal.
let's see, sony cant sell these things in the first place, so they get rid of the 20GB and sell the 60GB only. now they "drop the price" by $100, which is a good thing, but they now add a $600 sku again.
edit: expect a price cut for all 3 skus for the 360 by the holiday season.
That still is alot of money. o_O but, it is a drop.
any price drop is only a good thing for Sony. It may not boost sales a whole lot or be enough to suddenly start outselling the Wii but it will help. All they need is a brilliant E3 like Nintendo had last year (seeing as how much E3's been downsized I highly doubt this is possible) and then they're right back on top like they were last generation.
okay maybe they need a little more than a good E3 for that. What Sony needs is games FAST!
I like the sound of $399 >_>

$399 is a very good sound indeed.
And expect me to be getting a 360 if they drop the price point on that.

Thus far we know the $599 system will have a 80gb hd and will come with Motorsport which is a great game and cost $59.99. I think a "tard pack" would be a 360 elite that still overheats.
a great game... in your opinion. it's definitely no killer app. anyone who buys this thinking they're getting a bargain is fooling themselves.
Now that you have the PS3 60gb system at $499 I'd say it's a much better deal then the 360 Elite at $479 especially when you compare the failure rates of each system. For someone who wants that extra 20gb and a game for $100 bucks, I think it's still a decent deal, oh and don't forget those come with built in WIFI.
the PS3 actually looks a little more appealing now, especially since it comes with 5 blu-ray movies. i'm gonna watch for what happens. the thing is the PS's never had many games i liked before.

They're selling as fast as the 360 did this time after it's launch. The $600 model now is good for some people, but the $499 is going to be the sweet spot. Don't forget, it's more technology, and hardware quality, than the 360. I doubt that the 360 will see a price drop for two reasons. 1. Microsoft said it doesn't need one right now, and 2. The shareholders may not approve of a price drop after the $1.2B shoved into the repair process, the shareholders are only so willing to let an amount of their money pour into the Xbox divison which will likely no longer run in the black.
So does anyone know tha Canadian prices?
Oh wait, sweet, Canadians saved $10 more than Americans! the 60GB used to be $660, now it's $550! If we only saved $100 it would have been $560 just to be clear. But technicly Americans still pay less, but thats because Canadians are "rich".
Now, lets see if it's cheaper to buy the 80GB with MotorStorm, or Just the 60GB with MotorStorm seperate.....Well, where I live(Canada/Ontario) PS3 60GB plus MotorStorm (septerate) is plus tax, $706.78, so so far that seems like a really good deal, cause before where I live, the 60GB by itself costed $752.39, now I have to find what the 80GB will cost, but untill then, the 60GB plus Motor Storm is a good deal.
