Speaking to Reuters, Capcom CFO Kazuhiko Abe also said he expected the next generation console’s user base to grow over time, gradually.
"The number of PS2 users is still growing and a shift to the PS3 is on the back burner," said Abe.
"But, the price has been cut once and it is likely to be cut again towards the end of the year. I expect the (PS3's) installed base to grow gradually.

Just as a note, before people assume this isn't going to happen, I'd like to remind our members at how many thought that 1 price cut this year was impossible

if it was around 399.99, they wouldn't be on top, but they'd be selling much more, like Wii owners would go get a PS3.
If Nintendo releases a new system in 2009, which many think they might, then the current sales numbers stick with the Wii. If a new Nintendo system comes out (even a Wii 2), and Sony lowers the price of the PS3 then I can see where the PS3 can outlast the other system, thus having larger sales numbers....eventually.
That's true, but remember the PS3 is supposed to be Sony's system for the next 10+ years... at least that's one of the many nutty claims made by one of their reps some time ago.
Like I've said many times before, the gaming industry is at a fascinating point, a crossroads if you will. Will they stay conventional, or will they branch off to a new motion based era? Innovation has generally lead to staying power... there are exceptions to the rule *cough* virtual boy *cough*, but that's largely due to stepping beyond what modern technology is capable of doing well.

You kind of made my point. If the PS3 is around 10+ years then it's sales number will keep adding up, and thus probably be the best selling system.
PS2 was launched in October 2000 so that means it's been around for almost 7 years now. Sony has already said that a lot of games are coming out for the PS2 this year, so I'm sure that 7 year mark will hold up.
The PS3 is vastly more powerful then the PS2. Actually the PS2 was far less powerful then the Xbox or even the Gamecube, but it's the only one that keeps selling games, and before anyone wants to get smart about it, and say the PS2 is still selling games because the PS3 isn't that great, well your wrong. The PS2 is just a very good system.
So let me wrap this up by saying the PS3 with it's blu ray storage media could very easily be around for 10+ years so the reps "nutty claims" might just be right. All you have to do is look at the PS3's older brother, the PS2 to see this.
Now if people want to buy a new game system every 2 years...so be it, I don't plan on it.

There was a bit of sarcasm there on my part... I full heartedly believe that we will hear of the successor in 3-5 years, and by 2012 (or so) the new systems will go on sale. Sony has been absolutely awful at following through with it's word. Hell, they had the audacity to blame the lack of rumble in their controller saying it interfeared with being wireless... this after the 360 and nintendo did it easily. Now that the lawsuit was settled, hosana, the six-axis shock (or 6-shock as I calls it) rises from the impossible!!! What great engineers they must have to have figured it out after only 7-8 months after release!!
With the exception of the Wii (solely due to the motion system), I don't really feel this generation was necessary. Probably one of the smallest leaps in terms of graphics between any previous generations. Oooh, let's rush out an underused technology to force it on people... HD. Your average Joe is content living in standard def, why force others on them? I'd love to know how many people currently have their 360 or ps3 hooked up to a standard tv.

Let's go through all of this...comment.
Sony stopped using the rumble feature because of a lawsuit with Immersion Corp.
If you have an issue with companies forcing HD, then you can complain about the computer publishers, and the other game companies. Also, you can complain to the U.S. government, because in 2009 YOU and everyone else will have an HD tv or you will be buying a box that sits on top of your old tv to do a digital to analog conversion.
Once again, I will ask that you do something as simple as run a google search on your comments so that you can get the real information.
the only reason the PS2 still has game is because something like 1 in 3 houses has one. Therefore, if Wii numbers continue to rise it won't matter about graphical power because all the developers will be developing for the Wii. Well they won't all develop for the Wii but a good majority of them will.
This console war truly starts in 2008, when all three companies drop the price of their console.
