does anyone remember the console landscape (competitors, etc) during the the PS2 launch

i remember gamecube but when did the the xbox launch?

was the dreamcast in '95

The dreamcast was out in 1998 for japan and 1999 for the U.S and Europe.
'95 was the year the ps1 came out and i think the DC graphics were slightly advanced compared to the other console on offer...

when did the ps2 come out then

2000 and 2004 for china

Wow, was it that long ago? O.o Nintendo would hafta make some MAJOR improvements before they could dream of outselling the PS2. And let's not forget that consumers are still buying them.

The Ps2 is a good entertaining system, and its mostly because of its games!

Eventually . Nintendo wii will get good games out, and maybe then they will be the Ps2. But at the moment... I dont think so

The Wii will outsell the PS2 before this is over. Why? Because the Wii is the dominant console this generation, and every dominant console outsells the previous dominant console eventually. Take into consideration that the Wii is finding its way into non-gamers' houses in a way the PS2 only dreamed of, every third party company is lining up to develop for the Wii, and the halo effect of the super hot DS Lite, and you have a system that will outsell every console before it.

Need more convincing? Here is a chart of hardware sells of the Wii, PS2, and PS, with their respective launches aligned. As with most other areas, gravity bulks, and when people buy systems, friends pick them up, developers flock to it, causing more people to buy those systems, causing more friends to pick them up, causing more developers to flock to it, and so on.



You'll notice that the Wii, as of about week 36, has more total sales than the PS and PS2 did at their week 36 combined. It is highly unlikely that this trend will cease before the Wii can hit critical mass (which has probably already occured).

Ok cool. That kinda gives me more reason to beleive Wii will eventually outsell ps2.

Wii could do it, since Sony isn't really supporting the Ps2 anymore.

PS2, PS3. They both make Sony cash, so what do they care?

Anyway, the Wii would require alot of time to outsell the PS2 which is still selling well recently.

i tried a ps3 the other day and i thought it was going to be amazing... I was wrong...

I think Sony is probably making little, if any, money on the PS3.

I'm pretty sure Sony is losing money on the PS3 but given time and with cheaper components this will change. I still think we can't count the PS3 out yet but I have a feeling it will be 2nd to the Wii for a long time to come. I still think that the Wii is going to have a sudden drop after a while. Now it's still the hot thing to get and the harder it is to get the more people will want it. I think once the PS3 does get some killer games out there that they will slowly start eating back some of the market share that the Wii has taken. I love the Wii but I'm just telling my opinion of what COULD happen.

Anything could happen. We can't count any systems out yet, but all we know is the Wii is having major success right now. When colors for it come out, the hype could start all over again.
