With over 100 million units sold worldwide, the PlayStation 2's success is nothing to scoff at. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, however, believes that his latest contraption -- built entirely out of two Gamecube's duct taped together -- can surpass those numbers.
In an interview with Reuters, Iwata spoke of the unprecedented success of the PlayStation 2, adding "if we can make our bid to expand the gaming population a continued success, we could exceed that."
When it comes to the recent fire sale of the PlayStation 3, Iwata doesn't seem terribly concerned, noting that the overlap between the customers Sony is targeting against those of Nintendo is quite small. However, Reuters claims that Sony's "price drop" was a move to better compete with Nintendo. If that's the case, we anxiously await their bathroom scale peripheral.

Anything is possible but I'm gonna have to say that I don't think they will. PS2 is still the number 1 selling console over here. Only time will tell.

hate disagree but its because of "stupid party games" that the Wii has a shot at 100 million consoles
with that being said, it isnt gonna happen, the wii 2.0 will be out in 4-5 years...just not enough time to sell that many at current production levels

well nintendo wii still had been outselled all over the world so there are good chances that nintendo will surpase the ps2

3rd parties are knocking each other over lining up to develop for the wii, once they saw instant sellouts, a 10 mill+ plus install base , and MUCH lower development costs, its a no brainer, every developer not locked into sony/ms exclusivity is developing for the wii now, 2008, and beyond

It's very possible, seeing how many non-gamers are picking it up. With corruption and brawl on the way, we very well could see it outsell the PS2.
Also like Nintendo mentioned Wii still continues to be a sell out, if that continues it's even more likely.
