Full Version: Is WiiConnect24 Damaging your System?

Apparently, many a gamer are stating that leaving their Wii console connected to Nintendo's WiiConnect24 service is damaging the system. Now, we aren't ones to say "we told you so," but ... we told you so.

Perhaps our Wii is still very much alive and kicking because of our paranoia? Or maybe these folks just had bad consoles to begin with? Whatever it is, the ones reporting these issues of damaged pixels showing up on their TV (due to overheated GPUs) all have one thing in common: leaving the console in Standby mode.

Now I know that this isn't news to anyone on this site, and that this topic has been surfacing for quite a while, but it just made me wonder. I leave my Wii on standby, but I really do wish to know is it hurting the longevity? The thing gets very hot and the case expands. Touch the left side of your Wii and tell me do you think the paint feels brittle. I do, and the reason is obvious. It's from all the expansion and contraction of the case. And without a fan, the CPU and GPU could genuinely overheat.

I know the Wii pulls more power on standby then even the PS3, but I never thought it was getting this hot because of it. I haven't had any issues with the Wii, but maybe from now on I'll just turn WiiConnect24 off, since I have no real reason to leave it "connect" all the time.
I leave mine on WC24, and i9t does get very hot.  Perhaps I should turn it off as well.

Edit: Off-topic: Yay, bob-omb rank Big Grin
mine doesn't seem very hot or the paint doesn't feel brittle...maybe you guys are just having bad luck...

to gft: how can that be? The wii on standby is supposed to use as much energy as a mini light bulb on standby...I can't believe what you're saying.
Hmm.. I keep mine on standby and I just checked it. It's not too hot, but it's better not to take any chances.
i dont have this issue at all. one thing i noticed is that if you leave a game in the wii on standby and come back to play again its hotter than it would without a game inside. you should also consider the placement of your wii.
Bastards. Now you've all got me paranoid. I'll have to check mine when I get home. >:/

EDIT: txting my wife to have her check if it's hot right now... ;p

*Removes game from Wii . . . *

smart move, not only can it mess up the wii, but also the game, cause its exposed to heat.
The wife said our Wii is warm, but not hot. I think I still might turn WiiConnect24 off though. The last thing I want is for my Wii to overheat and die. :/
I think this might have been the problem with my first Wii, it's pixles were ****ed up. But i've had my second Wii connected to Wii connect 24 non stop ever since febuary, and it's as healthy as Nintendo's Wii sales!

I dunno, maybe I just jyxed myself, but I'm leaving it connected, for now.
I have noticed that in a lot of channels like the News Channel, and mainly the Everybody Votes Channel, that when you click the home button, sometimes the "Wii Menu" and "Reset" buttons get screwed up, and pixels start to break.

And also, believe me, after a while on WC24 the paint does get slightly brittle. It doesn't feel as smooth as the right side of the Wii. It doesn't flake off, but still feels slightly less shiny.
This is strange. My Wii is working fine and its on WC24. Its not exactly hot, there is a bit of warmth. But that is to be expected.
wow. i'm guess i was lucky when i got my wii.
yeah, my Wii seems fine...I leave it in stand-by whenever I'm not using it, and I've never had a problem with it getting too hot or feeling brittle...

are you guys leaving it in a well-ventilated room? that could be the issue, if you're not. I leave it in my living room when i'm home, and we tend to leave our ceiling fan on, leave the windows open unless its raining...etc. I also make sure its not directly side-by-side with our TV, systems, DVD player, etc, and that the power box for it is on the floor while it's on a shelf.

honestly, my Wii doesn't worry me. it's never gotten hotter than my laptop or it's adaptor battery pack thing. those things are fricken hot... but if it ever becomes as hot/hotter than those, THEN i'll worry.
I haven't had any pixel issues. Though sometimes Madden 07 used to hang a bit. My Wii often disconnects from WiiConnect for no reason, and so I just don't bother reconnecting it until I play a game. So I inadvertently turn it off.
I've had no problems either.

Warmth is expected because the fans are turned off when on standby.

I never leave my Wii on standby. I just don't see the point. Its not like im missing out on updates or nothing. Mayby if Nintendo sent out daily or weekly stuff to us like demos etc I might actually bother to leave it on standby.
i turn mine of because of the trees... THINK OF THE TREES MAAN!
^Double post. I leave my Wii on stand by 24/7 and its running fine. Its in a cool location though so it wont over heat.
