Nintendo's Wii rockets past 9 million unit sales, could overtake 360 by September (i believe i called this)

Despite launching almost a year after Xbox 360, Wii is now less than one million sales behind Microsoft's big white box. At its current pace it could even overtake global 360 sales in the next few months.

Last week Nintendo sold through 245,000 thousand Wii consoles and Microsoft just over 57,000 units of 360. That's 4.2 Wii's sold to every Xbox 360 according to our maths.

PS3 came in at just under 80,000 sales, and outsold 360 in North America in the same week by more than 5000 units.

The battle looks set to heat up this Christmas with big releases coming up for both consoles. Big-hitters like Halo 3, PGR 4, GTA 4, Mass Effect and Assassins Creed will no doubt boost 360 sales, while highly anticipated Nintendo titles Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3 and Super Smash Bros Brawl (in US at least) will do well for Wii.

The last official Nintendo figure for worldwide Wii sales was posted in March at six million sold, but if vgchats.com figures are accurate, Wii will be sitting at the top of the current-gen pile long before Christmas.

There's no stopping DS though, at 45 million worldwide sales and counting. It's one big party for Nintendo, it seems

I always knew that the Wii would soon pass the 360 sooner or later. Turns out to be sooner.

This is a pleasant suprise.

I'm still surprised DSlites are still selling like hotcakes.

I am not surprised at all knowing that they have done something no one else has before plus a lot of great games.

i bet part of it was Nintendo Announcing release dates for Mario and Smash Bros. the announement of Mario Kart Wii also helped.

Actually I bet Microsoft will say more sh*t now knowing that they arent going to be the #1 selling console of this gen.

Seriously, go Wii. But if I remember correctly, wasn't it late May-Mid June when it was confirmed that it sold 7 million?

When Wii finally gets out there good games, Metroid/Brawl/Galaxy, that number will definately boost a lot.

But Microsoft has a lot of games coming out too, Halo/AssassinsCreed/BioShock

This will be a close race, until next year.

I don't have, nor do I plan on getting a DS Lite. My DS "Phat" is just fine for me.

i agree with cloud those 3 games are prolly gonna be on the top 5 for this year.

so wii will be the global leader before the leaves turn, and thats before the xmas season when everyone in the world will be asking for a wii,

i'll bet the wii will have over a million console lead by december

I am not surprised since Wii hit 6 mill by March, I expected it. All the consoles have their big titles that will boost sales this holiday season.

why do people think the new games are going to make the Wii sell more units? think about it, how could it. Wii's are still constantly sold out. that means ALL Wii units are being sold. even with new games, how can it sell more than all? it's like saying i have five dollars and gonna spend six on lunch, or i have 10 movies and i'm selling all dozen to my friend. IT DOESN'T WORK LIKE THAT!
