Recently, there was a heated argument between myself and Pizzaturdell about OS X vs Windows. He claims I called him out on the entertainment industry, and called me a slew of names. He claims that I know nothing about the technology industry, which is FAR from the truth. First, let me start by saying I KNOW that Disney developed their own Linux software for editing movies. I know someone who worked on the project.
I'm not calling him out on that, he undoubtedly knows more about the industry than me, and good for him for being able to work in an industry he's so passionate about. However, I do have a little problem with the tone in which he used. He repeatedly used insults, and insulted my work in the industry. Granted, I will apologize to him right here, that my tone in the starting post was a little arrogant, but his response was uncalled for. Believe me, I know that OS X, and even Linux is superior in the respect of editing film. It's graphical, not kernel level, as I stated. What I was getting at was that if Windows had a better GUI, that would change. I know you think you know what's better, but from a coder's standpoint, we know the NT kernel WOULD be superior for editing film.
What I called him out for, and what he evaded was his lack of understanding of how the machines work. The days of the BSOD are long gone, and it's unfair to call that out without recognizing the kernel panic of macs. Both are nonexistent, and you really do have to be a complete tool to experience these issues. When I called him an Apple fanboy? Yes, maybe that was over reacting, but it's the same rhetoric I hear all the time, that "OMG ITs TEH SUPERIORZ, HEHE LOLZORZ". Sure, it's superior for digital media. But there's loads of other things done on these machines. For example, an industry just as big as film, the engineering industry, uses almost strictly Windows. It's always been that way. The point was that I was simply calling him out on lying about the operation of the systems. Do I surf Digg? Absolutely, I love reading about the different stories, and some comments are funny, but I agree, it can get childish.
The one last thing that bothered me was calling me out on my work. I never claimed I know everything under the sun, but I know a helluva lot more about the mechanics of the OS, and I can tell you, Windows problems are caused by poorly written 3rd party software, while many errors on Macs are caused by the 1st party Apple software. The thing is, Windows has so many crappy 3rd party apps, where OS X usually has solid ones (due to NICE development tools, namely Xcode). I was saying, there's more than gaming, web browsing, and movies done on computers. There are many other things PCs handle great (and they do video editing just fine), as well as many things other platforms to just well. I can tell you, from my experience, that Windows is a damn nice platform, and works very well. (They just need to get rid of the registry, which is the reason Windows installs will sometimes go downhill), which is an API level issue.
Anyway, you called me out on the software I do never being seen. For the past year, I've been working on a 3d rendering low level applet for Autodesk. (This is why I post much knowledge on game engine design in the regular forums), and that is included on the renowned engineering CAD program, Autodesk Inventor 2008. So, my work has been seen, and is often times used. What specific movies/TV have you published.
In closing,
I'd like to add that I'm apologetic for my insults, but that I am offended by the tone that pizza used, especially calling me out on things that are untrue. I'm not demanding an apolgy or anything of the sort. I'm clearing the air, and getting a chance to respond. What I'd like is Pizzaturdell to apologize for the tone used (never was I on a high horse), and I want to be able to get along.
This much knowledge in one place is often a great thing, but in a situation like this, it often conflicts. What we need to be able to do is get along, and we can used this knowledge to the benefit of everyone here in the forums. The fact that we have someone who works in film is a GREAT thing, and I'm sure he has much we can learn. Likewise from myself, I have much to share with people. So I'm offering a formal apology, not only to Pizzaturdell, but to the entire community, for my behavior and tone. I hope that he can accept this, and that we can get along for the best of the community. Fighting doesn't help, and that energy can better be expelled into sharing knowledge. So everyone, take care.
Sincerely,
sc7.
