At ten o'clock and on the busiest of E3 mornings, Nintendo unveiled their latest plot to further expand their business outside the realm of gamers: WiiFit.

Along with the new Wii Balance Board, WiiFit looks to do for fitness what Brain Age did for our math skills. Following the unveiling, Nintendo brain child and industry icon, Shigeru Miyamoto, took center stage, claiming WiiFit held personal presidence over more widely anticipated titles such as Super Smash Bros Brawl, Super Mario Kart and even his baby, Super Mario Galaxy.

When I think of games like Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Kart, and SSBB, I don't really think of Wiifit. Yeah it's a cool idea, but if peripherals that allow our moms to get into the Wii could be more important to Nintendo they our beloved 3 games mentioned above, then something is terribly wrong. It's coming to the point that I'm wondering when a vacuum attachment will be released for the Wii and powered by those USB2.0 ports in the back.

Nintendo better get back to the games, or at the very least make them the most important thing...be sure to read the whole article at the source link. It's really interesting.
"If a game is fun, it doesn't really matter whether it uses dice, a joypad, pencil and paper, or a bathroom scale as the controller. It only matters that it's fun. "
For not mentioning Metroid, I lose respect for you.

Regarding WiiFit. Its fine, I'm looking forward to trying it out. Nintendo have 4 big guns coming out between August and early next year. Thats alot more interesting games than I see elsewhere.

My only concern is the annoying emergence of crappy party games. We get it, they are fun sometimes... but the Wii can't live off them. Smarten up and rid us of the unnecessary genre.
The thing is, it's not only attracting moms. I'm very much looking forward to playing WiiFit. Why? A lot of my friends don't like the complexity of Gears of War, or the brutality of RE4. Does that make them simple-minded people? Of course not! If you want someone to swim, you don't drop them into the ocean. I actually believe that (and many opinions may differ) games like WiiFit are going to encourage people to run to Sony and Microsoft next-gen or even late this gen. They've got a feel of how video games play, why not drop a little more money for a PS3?
i agree with LM-X
we've known about the big titles development for some time now. they just wanted to demonstrate something new. i prolly won't get it unless if wii fit is phenomenal or there are other worthy games that use the balance board, but i have to give credit to nintendo for trying to innovate and making the wii a more integral part of family entertainment.

not to say that all parents are the same, or that our society is even the same as it was when i was growing up... but nintendo's paradigm shift makes a lot of parents more willing to buy a console. i know after the nes i had trouble talking my parents into getting me a console in later generations (after that i only had a used snes and saturn that i personally bought cheap well after their primes and had to tide most of my gaming urges over by pc games... which is why i'll prolly always be a pc gamer foremost). by redefining what a console or video game can be, nintendo has made it more worthwhile for families to own a console. how many parents did you see playing ocarina of time... but there are plenty that have enjoyed wii sports.

and one of these days nintendo or some third party is going to be smart enough to start releasing wii games that take advantage of a good gesture system to please hardcore gamers. imagine black and white for wii. or a fairly full feature rts or tbs for wii where you can just point to select various units and use gestures or simple point and choose menus to give commands.
increase saturation of the platform seems to bee the mission objective with this one.

use a perheperal to become helth and mind concious and moms will snatch the system up... even if there is only that game for the perheperal... and the kids will reap the rewards of Metroid, SSBB, and Mario.

just look at R.O.B and the original NES... that perheperal was to disguise the NES as a toy in order to sell it stateside because Atari gave video games a bad name untill nintendo fixed it.

Long post short, don't bash wii fit, it allows another route for system saturation

great post Smile

Remember what happened with the powerpad? Support was nearly non existent. I can't see this as any different.

I scoff at nintendos "innovation" claim. The zapper, powerpad and even Wiimote were influenced by the NES. Remember when people would swing their nes controllers to get mario to jump? Thats where the motion controls for the Wii came from. Blech

I think that's precisely why everyone likes the system. My sister used to move her controller, and I was like "Uhh... that won't do anything." Now she does it and I'm like "F***, she just beat my score".
