When the PS3 first launched, people stood in line for days wanting to get the system. Sadly enough most of those people didn't want to take the system home and play it, but post it on sites like Ebay so that they could make huge profits from the low quantity and high demand of Sony's latest game console.
Times have changed and now anyone can go into their local department store and pick up a Playstation 3...but post people aren't. So the question is...When does the PS3 become affordable in the minds of gamers?
When you compare the other two Next Gen system to the Playstation 3, there are some similar features, but also some very distinct differences.
Many would agree that the PS3 and Xbox 360 can produce very similar graphics, and some would even claim that the 360's processor can match the PS3's cell. Others would say that the PS3's cell processor hasn't been fully utilized yet, so that argument is up for debate, but there are somethings that aren't.
Thus far, it's widely known that even though many people aren't buying the PS3, one would be very hard pressed to call it anything but a well made system. It currently holds a less than 1% failure rate, which also distinguishes itself from the Xbox 360 that could have a failure rate as high as +30%.
Microsoft has now extended warranties for their 360 systems to 3 years, but I wonder how many people really want to send their systems in to get them repaired, and possibly have to wait a number of weeks to get it back. Don't get me wrong, the 360 has been huge for this generation, but hardware wise, it falls short of it's competition, and even it's older brother the Xbox.
Now moving onto that little white system the Nintendo Wii. We all know that the Wii is fairly inexpensive. We know that it's a lot of fun to play, especially when lots of people are around, and it shares one very good similarity with the PS3. The Wii has a less than 1% failure rate which should make it's owners very happy.
Without getting into the same old rant that everyone goes into when it comes to the Wii's technology, I will simply say this. I think the Nintendo Wii was a system put out by it's parent company Nintendo to make some quick cash, and it's worked. Nintendo is currently making about $40 off of every system. With that being said, I expect Nintendo to come out with a much more powerful system the next time around. I can envision a system with removable hard drive, HD graphics, and perhaps even something that will use which ever high capacity media is still around. I also wouldn't be at all surprised if this happens in a couple of years, and even if Nintendo doesn't come out with some super game system, I would still expect a dramatic Wii revision by 2009.
With all this being said, I have to come back to my original question. When does the PS3 become affordable? It has the HD graphics, it comes with a variety of SKU's, all of which offer a hard drive. It has apparently been made very well with it's low failure rate. It also has much higher media space with blu ray topping out (thus far) at 50gb of storage, and it has the PSN. Plus we should not forget that you can actually play blu ray movies on it too. So what's the price that makes you happy? $199, $299, $399, $499 or none of the above?
I can understand why people aren't buying PS3's right now because they haven't seen the games to compel them to do so, but what are people looking for? Are we all moving away from what gaming once was? Do we all want games like Nintendogs and Brain Age on our consoles or are we willing to stick with systems that fails at a possible rate of 30%+ but gives us Halo 3 and Gears of War?
I think one important question people should ask themselves is this: If gaming continues the way it is...where do we go from here, and what is the actual value of a system?

.....but yeah back on topic..i do think the ps3 is worth every penny sure it doesnt have any amazing games at the moment but its just a matter of time and well that time is comming pretty soon..and how much is a blue ray player right now?? (like 500 to over 1000 dills.) i think the ps3 is an all around good system and the 499 price tag is pretty damn good deal for what your getting..
