Full Version: When does the PS3 become affordable in the minds of gamers?

When the PS3 first launched, people stood in line for days wanting to get the system. Sadly enough most of those people didn't want to take the system home and play it, but post it on sites like Ebay so that they could make huge profits from the low quantity and high demand of Sony's latest game console.

Times have changed and now anyone can go into their local department store and pick up a Playstation 3...but post people aren't. So the question is...When does the PS3 become affordable in the minds of gamers?

When you compare the other two Next Gen system to the Playstation 3, there are some similar features, but also some very distinct differences.

Many would agree that the PS3 and Xbox 360 can produce very similar graphics, and some would even claim that the 360's processor can match the PS3's cell. Others would say that the PS3's cell processor hasn't been fully utilized yet, so that argument is up for debate, but there are somethings that aren't.

Thus far, it's widely known that even though many people aren't buying the PS3, one would be very hard pressed to call it anything but a well made system. It currently holds a less than 1% failure rate, which also distinguishes itself from the Xbox 360 that could have a failure rate as high as +30%.

Microsoft has now extended warranties for their 360 systems to 3 years, but I wonder how many people really want to send their systems in to get them repaired, and possibly have to wait a number of weeks to get it back. Don't get me wrong, the 360 has been huge for this generation, but hardware wise, it falls short of it's competition, and even it's older brother the Xbox.

Now moving onto that little white system the Nintendo Wii. We all know that the Wii is fairly inexpensive. We know that it's a lot of fun to play, especially when lots of people are around, and it shares one very good similarity with the PS3. The Wii has a less than 1% failure rate which should make it's owners very happy.

Without getting into the same old rant that everyone goes into when it comes to the Wii's technology, I will simply say this. I think the Nintendo Wii was a system put out by it's parent company Nintendo to make some quick cash, and it's worked. Nintendo is currently making about $40 off of every system. With that being said, I expect Nintendo to come out with a much more powerful system the next time around. I can envision a system with removable hard drive, HD graphics, and perhaps even something that will use which ever high capacity media is still around. I also wouldn't be at all surprised if this happens in a couple of years, and even if Nintendo doesn't come out with some super game system, I would still expect a dramatic Wii revision by 2009.

With all this being said, I have to come back to my original question. When does the PS3 become affordable? It has the HD graphics, it comes with a variety of SKU's, all of which offer a hard drive. It has apparently been made very well with it's low failure rate. It also has much higher media space with blu ray topping out (thus far) at 50gb of storage, and it has the PSN. Plus we should not forget that you can actually play blu ray movies on it too. So what's the price that makes you happy? $199, $299, $399, $499 or none of the above?

I can understand why people aren't buying PS3's right now because they haven't seen the games to compel them to do so, but what are people looking for? Are we all moving away from what gaming once was? Do we all want games like Nintendogs and Brain Age on our consoles or are we willing to stick with systems that fails at a possible rate of 30%+ but gives us Halo 3 and Gears of War?

I think one important question people should ask themselves is this: If gaming continues the way it is...where do we go from here, and what is the actual value of a system?

Define "we". We as hardcore gamers, or "we" as in the audience that just wants to play a good game?

forgot my question mark
It was worth it for me, simply because I had a dying Xbox 360, and I wanted to extract my value/investment out of it before it went.

If I were going to buy one straight up, I would not have purchased one for $600 when I did. Simply put, it's a great system, but the price is going to drop, it's high up there, and most people say why not wait for better games. I believe if they made the 60 GB $399, it would outsell the Xbox 360, simply on it's name, and better quality/features. Add the list of games coming out, and it would make a killing.
I think the PS3's ability to stick around for the long haul with Blu Ray media is what makes it truly an affordable system.

But that gives people the ability to say, "well, it's gonna be around long, so why not wait for the price to come down?"

Just playing my favorite game, Devil's advocate.

That's fine if they want to wait, but what do they do in the meantime? Do they go out and buy from Nintendo that may have a totally different system in 2 years or do you take a chance on a 360?

I've always advocated people wait for a good price, but one can wait forever for that "right price" and never buy anything at all Smile
Ah, well Nintendo never said anything about a revision in two years, and it was even stated that even TALKING about it now would be premature. I don't expect them to start saying anything until, 2009 (as stated before). But the cool thing with the Wii is, even if it was to have a revision, it's a cheap choice and if people can upgrade a iPod for the same price they'd probably do the same with the Wii.
Nintendo is now getting use to the profit from the Wii, so I doubt if they'll be some magic firmware update that will make the system more then what it is now. I might be totally wrong, but if another system does come out so soon, then that $249 price tag won't look so inexpensive, especially if two other system or even one of the other next gen systems is still around and strong.
My initial response when Sony first announced the $599 price tag was dispair. I simply could not afford something that expensive. As a husband/father in a single-income family, I have to pick and choose what I purchase very carefully. I'm not in the habit of trading games in for the same reason: I spent $ on them, so I'm keeping them!

Now that I have a better paying job, and now that Sony has gotten the ball rolling (albeit somewhat slowly still), I'm looking forward to what the PS3 can do. I'm hoping that I can pool enough money to pick up a backwards compatible 60GB model before they're all gone, but I'm not holding my breath.

Bottom line: it will be interesting to see how Sony takes advantage of the Blue-Ray storage space for gaming purposes. That, and hopefully Sony will get a clue and make its online service a bit more user friendly.
harrison made it pretty clear there would be no revised wii any time soon, so if one comes out 5 years after launch, thats okay because i had 5 years of great gameplay leading up to a system upgrade

and sadly those early sony adoptors really got the shaft with a price drop and a bigger hard drive...there system purchased at launch is now obsolete...the next thing for sony could be a PS3 elite, but i hope not

and god help you if you bought a 360 at launch

I'm not sure how people who bought the PS3 early on got the shaft. We all take a chance when we buy any system that eventually the price will go down. Will Wii owners (like myself) get the shaft when they drop the price? Also, what would you consider a PS3 Elite to be? Today's PS3 gives gamers more then the 360 Elite does.

Obsolete? Not at all. I have my EE.GS, which saved me $129 on a new PS2.

i was referring to the MS practice of confusing the consumer with multiple versions of the same system with various bells and whistles...i hope Sony doesnt make that mistake

there will be no price drop for the wii till it stop selling out... so when will that be 2009? i will have more than got my moneys worth by then...

i hate to use sony as an example again but if you bought it last november, you were given ONE quality game at launch before they dropped the price (unless you count motostorm) thats a tough pill to swallow for the early adopter
I see what your saying, but other then launch titles, how many other High Quality Wii games have we seen? Zelda and Excite Truck seem to be the the best of the bunch.

I think most people will look at the game coming out for the PS3 this year alone and see many reasons to have one in their living rooms.

i am the wrong guy to ask about this because i really love wii sports, wiiplay, rayman, warioware, big brain acadamy, most if not all are referred to derisively around here as 'stupid party games' or 'just a bunch of crappy minigames'

i also thought zelda and excite truck were great

didnt care much for the controls on madden 07 and call of duty 3(both ports)

still want a couple games (RE4 and SPM) before metroid next month

so i am pretty satisfied, but i think you and i might be different gamers

If I had a job and I had the money, I would get a Ps3. But I don't.
It would need to be €400 for me
well since im a starving college student i really dont have much money to spend that often and when i do i usually just buy the essentials such ass food and cloths and if i can a game. I mos def wouldnt buy any game system priced at 599 no matter how sweet it was, i just simply cant afford that at the moment. 499 is better but i would have to starve myself for about three weeks (witch i will probably end up doing since i want a ps3 really badly). I'll probably just end up eating at my parents house and bumming gas money off them Toungue.....but yeah back on topic..i do think the ps3 is worth every penny sure it doesnt have any amazing games at the moment but its just a matter of time and well that time is comming pretty soon..and how much is a blue ray player right now?? (like 500 to over 1000 dills.) i think the ps3 is an all around good system and the 499 price tag is pretty damn good deal for what your getting..
You make some very good points Angel, but I'd say that no console is worth starving over, that is until MGS4, Lair, or one of the other awesome PS3 games comes out.

Maybe we'll get lucky and see a price drop around the Christmas holiday season...so an already great system can be a little easier on your wallet, or for someone who might be feeling generous around the holidays.
The PS3 will become affordable for me when it is either $399 ot even $299
Or atleast I wish they'd drop off the $50 to make it $499 CDN istead on $549.99 CDN, but at least it's not $659.99 like it used to be, or even 699.99 when they raised the price, too bad, once the 60 GB is no more, then i'll have to buy the 80gb 659.99 Sad .
