US Patent Application 0070174531 is of particular interest to PSP fans: it reveals strange plans for connectivity between a DualShock/SIXAXIS controller and Sony's handheld. According to the patent, a "control docking unit" will "facilitate use of one or more controls provided on the control docking unit." Essentially, a controller connected to the PSP will be able to control the system.

The system will use a "wired or wireless communication link," which may suggest at both PS2 and PS3 controllers being compatible with this feature. In addition, "the portable processing unit can be configured to provide additional functions, features, or enhanced operation when coupled to the control docking unit." It looks like players will finally be able to use dual analog controls in-game. (Note: hackers have already been able to do something similar.)

Of course, not all patent applications come to fruition in the marketplace. Regardless, this is certainly an interesting development, one we wouldn't mind seeing Sony pursue.

All I can say is WOW, simply WOW. Though if this comes to pass the PSP and PS3 sixaxis better lock it really good to each other.
Oh yes, actually I saw this, it looked strange but cool. It would have been a nice idea if implemented well. Nice work gft
If this does come out this put aside the complaint of the analog stick on the PSP's. Imagine having your PSP slim hooked up showing on your TV and using a PS3 Sixaxis controller to play your game....very cool.
OMG if this did happen it would be so awesome, using the sixaxis developers would now be able to make motion controlled psp games and that would be AMAZING
I like how everything's flip flopped. For quite a while handhelds were going to be used to play games on your home console, but now a piece from your home console could very well play your PSP....cool
This is a very cool feature because I sure as heck don't like the analog on the PSP, but Sony needs to realize that the PSP is a handheld. I want gaming on the go, I don't want a reason to play my PSP at home where I have a million other devices to play with. Focus on the portable side of things and people will go to the PSP. Right now it's looking like a PS1.5 and that sounds less appealing than the DS.

Now in no way do I want this to be a comparison with the DS, but since Nintendo knows the basics and knows what to do with a handheld, even though the DS has worse graphics and less features they know what the majority want in a handheld which is why I believe they sell well. While there is no way I can doubt that this is a very cool feature, I just feel it's too much in the wrong department. Just fix the analog on the PSP.
So your saying that hooking up the controller directly to the bottom of the PSP would be way to bulky for you?
That looks cool, and would make it easier to control for some people, myself included.
In a way... yes. I don't really want to walk around with a controller and a PSP. That's not gonna fit in my pocket.
I'd do it just for added functionality that neither hand held currently gives us and tell everyone who looks at you odd to shove off.
