A brand new Rockstar franchise is set to make its debut exclusively on PlayStation 3, with Sony claiming that the GTA developer wants to "make a game that you can truly only do on PS3, harnessing the power of CELL and Blu-ray disc".

Michael Shorrock, director of third party relations at SCEA, made the announcement on the the official PlayStation blog over the weekend. While details are scant right now, Shorrock did confirm that the news relates to a franchise different to the previously revealed interactive detective story L.A. Noir.

Shorrock continued, "We are announcing that a new franchise from Rockstar Games will be exclusive to PS3. As part of our long standing relationship with Rockstar, and the incredible success for both companies with the cultural icon that is Grand Theft Auto, we've agreed to the PlayStation exclusive rights of the next great franchise from the Rockstar studios."

While Shorrock was keen to note that GTA will continue its presence on Sony consoles, he added that he was "even more excited about what's to come from the current and future relationship between our companies".

I can't help but get the feeling of fair justice for this one. The fourth installment of Rockstar's flagship title, Grand Theft Auto, was given exclusive content of Microsoft's Xbox 360, behind closed doors and evidently, behind Sony's back.

As for what game this could be, I presume we can't really know just yet. The only details we know as of now is that it is apparently "a game that you can truly only do on PS3, harnessing the power of CELL and Blu-ray disc". This presumably tells us details of a large, open world game, similar to Grand Theft Auto, but perhaps a longer story, and a bigger world to play in, which of course sounds impressive enough for most gamers.

I shall keep you posted with any more news of this upcoming secret title which I find.

how does the media affect the game at all? you can fit as much as you want on a DVD because there are millions of lossless compression algorithms...

and if worse comes to worst. the Xbox is online is it not? why not pull content from the servers.

and hasn't it been proven that the 360 and the ps3 are evenly matched in power?

damn, I hate marketing spiel.
Me too, I didn't write the top part Big Grin

But yeah generally, let's be honest, even if something is compressed slightly it loses even the teensiest piece of quality *cough* The sound quality in Resident Evil 2 N64 Version *cough* but I understand what you mean, but let's let the babies have their bottles.
In the past the graphics chips within both the 360 and PS3 have been compared to one another and it's been said that they share about the same power.

I don't think anyone really knows what the cell processors in the PS3 can actually do, because we haven't really seen them used yet...at least not to their fullest potential.

I think this game sounds very interesting, and I look forward to seeing some video of actually game play sometime in the future. I'd really like a good detective story that wasn't confined to point and click.
No one knows what PS3 can do because it's so darn hard to do anything with it.
Normally things are pretty tough when you first start doing them, but when you get a year under your belt they tend to get easier. Right now companies are programming for the 360 because it's been out longer. It seems that programming for the Wii is either pretty easy or companies aren't trying as hard as they could. It will take time with the PS3, but we've already seen reports that Sony is giving much more support to 3rd party companies in order for them to better utilize the PS3's capabilities.
It wouldn't surprise me if this statement was a bit coerced after Rockstar said GTA IV is better on the 360 last week.
Perhaps, we think they'll only be two more missions in that game, and it's said MS paid $50 million for that. I'm not sure if it's worth it.

The words "exclusive bonus content" are pretty valuable in marketing.

True, but if gamers pick up the 360 version and see that there's two missions that include...go pick up franky and the diner and kill geno down the road with full video and voice acting, I think they'll be a little disappointed.

I'm sure this deal was done a long time ago, but I'm guessing MS wants people to feel confident about their 360's again. I know not everyone has had the hardware failures, but for those who did, they might be a little hesitant to pick this game up, even if it has "bonus content".

Good point though joker
It wasn't two missions, it was another two episodes.
Glad to see some exclusive stuff on PS3 Big Grin

If this game would have been released for 360 around christmas and after the new SKU that is suppose to take care of hardware failures then I'm guessing it might have gotten more people to buy a 360.  Right now though, why would anyone buy a 360 even at a lower cost knowing they were picking up a system that still has that potential issue?

Either way, this "exclusive" game for the PS3 should be interesting, because Rockstar has done some amazing games in the past and with the new level of detail we're seeing with GTA4 this next project should be a winner.
