Though Nintendo UK denies that it has received any reports of Wiis being bricked due to the WiiConnect24 service, you can never be too safe with any $200+ investment. Xtremetuner has created a hardware mod with the specific intention of guarding the console from overheating while it is in standby mode.

WiiControl acts as an external interface that monitors and displays the temperature of the system on its LCD screen. When the mod detects temperatures beyond 35°C, it automatically activates the Wii's fan, even in standby mode. An audio warning will also notify the user if the temperature ever exceeds 44°C. The fan is disabled once the console has cooled down to 30°C. Check past the post break for a video demonstration.

best part about it is that all you need to do is plug in the usb cord, and you're set

Is this the most useful mod I've ever seen for Wii? Yes it is.

We all know about how our lovely Wii consoles tend to heat up in standby mode, and how the case expands on the left side of the console. We don't need to be told these things.

This mod is so simple, yet brilliant in all rights. Wii heats up, fan turns on. Wii cools down, fan turns off. This is the kind of thing which Nintendo should have placed on the Wii motherboard since day one, or at least after noticing a few complaints of screen tearing and dead pixels (naturally caused by overheated GPUs). There is one flaw which Xtremetuner have also overcome quite remarkably.

You see, if this mod was an internal motherboard modification, then essentially the device would be useless, because you're voiding the warranty and Nintendo would at least not give you a replacement console. But amazingly, and to be frank, quite brilliantly, Xtreme has managed to get the device working by USB, one of the few items which has achieved this, presumably because the cord will carry no data, but rather heat and electric signals instead. I want one.

What do you think of this clever invention?

That is so awesome! I would definitely consider this if I had an overheating problem. But my Wii doesn't even seem to get that hot so it's fine! Plus it doesn't void the warrenty? Maybe I'll get it just in case. My only concern would be it overworking the fan and breaking it.
Kindrik has merged these two posts.

Eventhough my Wii doesn't get too hot, and I havn't heard of many overheating problems but honestly wouldn't mind having that in my system. As long as it doesn't cause any problems in the long run like the Intercooler did to the 360. :/
Oh sorry Wenis, I never thought of scanning the Mod section *apologizes*
I don't like it. I bet this would cause the Wii to fail sooner. The constant heat cycling is what normally causes solder joints to crack. Leaving the Wii at a constant temperature (warm or otherwise) would prolong its life.

With that said why leave the Wii in standby mode to begin with? IIRC you can still use the news/weather channels it just takes slightly longer when they load.

edit: This is impossible to do externally. I think you've been misled. It still requires you to modify the console. It uses the USB port only for power. So in essence you are voiding your warranty in order to protect the system? LOL
how do you know this? maybe it detects heat fluctuations through the USBs

edit - Ciper look here at the first post, also all that matters is that it can turn the fan on...

I did read that post (your URL is broken btw). It uses the USB port to get power. You still have to crack the case to install it.

There is no way to sense/disable a mod chip externally. The temperature sensor and fan has to be directly connected to the unit as noted in the thread you linked

But u will get save 5 Volt from the USB-Ports (also in Standby). Cut the PCB at the connector for the fan and use a transistor

I'm all for modifying my system but cutting traces to the fan isn't my cup of tea.

as cool as it is i probably wouldn't buy it either, cuz i have standby mode off
I turned my standby off to, but then I couldn't access the News or Weather channels, because it said my WC24 was off, which it wasn't
This is cool although I have never had any problem with the Wii overheating.
play your consoles people Wink
yeah, i wouldn't try this if i had an issue with Standby mode...knowing me, i'd screw something up, and then i'd be out of luck trying to get it fixed. I'd rather just turn the system off completely than run the risk of making the issue even worse.
