"Maybe next year sometime, we may have new characters in the same way we came up with Pikmin when we introduced the GameCube."

These were Miyamoto's remarks to Dean Takahashi during E3 this year, as Dean manages to get his lengthy interview online. During the interview, Miyamoto touches on a variety of subjects, focusing most on Wii Fit, naturally, but does stray to discuss other things about his work life at Nintendo. And, while the remainder of the interview is interesting, as with most times Miyamoto conducts one, we can't help but come back to that quote up top there.

What kind of new characters could we be seeing? What new franchise (or, dare we say, franchises) are we going to be looking to in the future for those fun experiences Nintendo is so wonderful at providing?

new original games are always good news

I bet you four rep points that it's cutesy-wootsey and doesn't involve things shaped like human beings.
And a game that the whole family can enjoy!! Yay!!
Oh yay, a family game. Does this mean I won't enjoy it on my own? Well, I have faith in Miyamoto.
As long as it's not a money whore product (for the whole family as everyone's said), and they actually think of the gamers, that would be amazing. Hopefully Nintendo succeeds.
Why don't they finish off games, first? Like Project HAMMER, instead of Shelving it.
as long as it's as original and good as the two pikmin games. still my fave gc games.
I have never played the pikmin games.... am i missing out? i've heard great things
i heard pikmin is fun but corny

Pretty much. It's a bit childish...but I have to say, I enjoyed the whole game. I would recommend Pikmin 1, not so sure about Pikmin 2...my friend bought it, but it wasn't as good.

really the only thing that might be childish about them is the story and the appearance. and they was no more childish than katamari. their gameplay is fairly challanging. i really can't see an 8 yr old enjoying them. most people that young would give up as they actually become somewhat difficult and require some abstract reasoning to complete. i personally would say it was more accurately a quirky puzzle game w/ simplified rts elements (you must manage your pikmin force and give them commands). i would have to say as well that other than smash bros, the pikmin games were the only games i found for which the gc controller was actually an ideal setup.

and pikmin 2 actually got higher reviews in general (not that that means anything). i preferred the original as you have a limited number of game days to complete your objectives. but some people didn't like that aspect of the game and they would in my opinion be better off playing pikmin 2. pikmin 2 also has more items to collect, underground play (no time passes) and two new kinds of pikmin to manage.
Last time they introduced something new, it was Pikmin and that was pretty successful, so there's hope.

Well that wouldn't be entirely new, because that's already known. I think he's talking about something else.

Knowing Miyamoto, it should be good. *Thinks Pikmin*
It will be an animal/alien or something targetted at the whole family, it will involve 'evil' thigns taking over and the charecter has the save someone.

Meh..We want the new star fox, not a new franchise
Maybe project hammer IS the new franchize...
That game could turn into a franchise if it's well received, but we already know about Project H.A.M.M.ER., I think he would have said it was that instead a new franchise.
I Hope it's good. And why does everyone think its going to be a family franchise? It could be something 'M' rated...

sounds cool. Hope nintendo pulls it off
I hated the first Pikmin. Therefore I didn't buy-- or even RENT-- the second one.

Games with time limits FTML.
I'm all for some new games. In time we could find the next Zelda, Mario, Metroid, etc... They were once new as well. I can still remember the original commercial for the Legend of Zelda for the NES. That commercial was crazy and I thought it was the strangest thing I had ever heard of. Look how that turned out.
