Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter thinks that, just as Nintendo eschewed the normal method of competing in the "console war"-- a console at least as powerful as its contemporaries-- so will they break the pattern of the traditional release cycle. He sees the falling costs of graphics processors and rising public demand for high definition possibly leading Nintendo to release a Wii that can output in HD in "two to three years."

"Consumers may hope for improved graphics, and my guess is that Nintendo will comply," Pachter told GamePro. An HD Wii would necessarily be an all-new console, with games designed for HD graphics. Are you ready for Wii 2 in 2009? Is the general public ready for the sting of console obsolescence?

I say if it were to come out, I wouldn't be too suprised. dissapointed maybe that I would have to buy another wii though. then again, it would be cool if they did come out with a 'wii 2', but games could still be played on the "normal" wii, just without as good of graphics

Pure speculation and stupidity.
Yeah, why would Nintendo want to make all of their fans happy instead of making cash off of the Wii.

Let's hope Nintendo turns a corner and does something like this, though I think 2 or 3 years will scorn those of us who bought a Wii already.
I wouldn't be too happy if a wii2 came out, because i'd have to buy it agian....
If anything does happen it won't be released for 4/5 years

Of course its speculation, but how is it stupid?

I think,,, no Im absolutely positive we talked about this before.

Its stupid because it won't happen. The Wii was outdated the moment it was released ad people still bought it. The target demographic is not the 14-28 year old male which would care about these things but rather younger kids and older adults who are more interested in having fun even if its pixelated.
I can't see Nintendo implementing something like this. They've shown from the beginning that they don't care about graphical power as much as the other companies do. All Nintendo has to do is come out with enough games to please both the casual and hardcore gamers and make sure they have good 3rd party support. That's all they need to win this generation, not HD graphics...
Very good point Ciper.

I can't see Nintendo taking to jump into HD untill their next home console.
But when it comes down to it, Nintendo IS a business, and usually a business' main goal is to make money.  So how do you target that other crowd that does care about graphics? by giving the system better graphics obviously.  And I highly doubt there would be people that wouldn't buy it because of better graphics.  unless of course it costed more
It would be a good thing IF and only if Sony seriously pulls through on this whole 10 year plan for the PS3. In 4 or 5 years more advancements in hardware and graphics will enable an HD Wii with the same if not better features than the PS3 for the same pricetag that the Wii has now, so it would make sense.

Nail+Head. That is exactly it, the wii is inexpensive to build. At last estimate I read it costs 180$ to manufacture. Look at the GC vs PS2. The GC had a more powerful graphics system and yet the PS2 outsold it. Look at the Dreamcast, arguable the best system of its time and it died. How about the superior game gear vs the game boy?
It has been proven over and over that number of features and having the best graphics are not the main driving factor especially when the audience is anyone but 14-28 year old males. They are the only group that has a "more is always better" mentality.

If anything a Wii2 could come out 5 years from now that will again be behind the curve of console power.

Thats because consoles win with fun games. But most games are usually fun with good graphics
I don't agree. Recently I had a TON of fun with this game http://www.bontago.com/ which is a student project and uses the simplest graphics you can imagine. Its strangely similar to the Steven Spielberg blocks Wii game. Its even network playable!

Besides have you read that Nintendo is raking in some serious money with VC sales? Those games have extremely outdated graphics and yet they continue to sell well.
Hmmm. Even if an HD wii were launched, by then I dunno if I'd make that investment..
i would agree that it would be a lousy business move for nintendo to do this until about 4 or 5 yrs into the wii's life. they should be thinking about a new console by then (most likely microsoft will be as well). but there's no reason they couldn't release an updated wii around that point (ala the ps2 slim) so long as the wii is still commercially viable such as the ps2 is at this time.

not to say that sony should let nintendo and microsoft define the timing of the next generation of consoles, but it does seem kind of risky to support a console for ten yrs as most likely nintendo's next console will be about as powerful as a ps3 if not more and certainly microsoft's will be a good deal more powerful. initially after the release of those two consoles that decision might look intelligent as developers will be more accustomed to the ps3 architecture and capabilities, but after a generation or two of games come out for those two consoles they could make sony's choice look bad.
there's no real reason for Nintendo to release an updated Wii in 4-5 yrs. as you said, a new system will likely be released around that time which, looking at Nintendo's track record, will be backwards compatible. this new console would most likely have better processing capabilities and likely support HD. in essence, when you people talk about a "Wii 2.0" you're really talking about Nintendo's next console. while i hope it does support the Wii and Wii-mote, i hope Nintendo doesn't stick to this one concept and expect it to continue making money. they should come up with something even better and more fun than the Wii

as far as the same Wii with better processing and games that can only be played on it, it doesn't seem like enough of an upgrade for Nintendo to risk its current Wii installed users
This is fitting

Well stated, Ciper.
