Just a warning for people who might get an email telling them that there's an attachment that would let them play Super Mario Bros. The game does open up and play, but while you're playing a virus is going through your system messing things up. So if you see such an email, just ignore and delete it.

Upload any file you want and it will check it against ALL the popular (and some not so popular) virus scanners.
Would just having an anti-virus program be better?
Actually NO it wouldn't. No virus scanner can detect all malware. In fact if you like PM me your email address and Ill send you a trojan that is only detected by about half of the virus scanners. You can upload it to virustotal and see which can detect it. The worst thing is that current Symantec defs (the most popular in the industry) dont see it as a threat!

I use to submit samples to the AV companies in order to get definitions published. My company had nearly 20k computers with half of those being in china. For some reason the machines in china were always getting infected with the newest virus which then would spread across the network and effect other regions. Security was put in place to reduce the chance of users infecting each other but it still happened. Eventually I had a Vlan for each business unit (finance, hr, sales etc..) and they were not able to directly communicate. Problem is the newest malware often takes advantage of vulnerabilities on the server or they will copy themselves into writable network shares. When other people communicate with that server they would get infected.

Management got so worked up over it I started to mirror the "private" ftp site where symantec stored its newest defs. These defs were updated on average 30 times a day,,,, and so computers in the portion of the network I controlled did too(well it would check every 45 minutes). Even that was a problem because sometimes you could get false positives. Once it false positived on a windows system file and caused WFC to kick in on EVERY machine! It would restore the file which would then be promptly deleted by the AV. Suckage to say the least.

Don't have a false sense of security because you are running AV software. Just because it says the file is clean it doesnt mean it is. I suggest turning heuristics off because it is rarely accurate and slows resident scanning even further. Besides there are "wrapper" programs that can easily disguise already detectable files. The makers of PKZIP make a good wrapper called PKLITE which can hide file contents. The program itself is not intended as a hacking tool so many AV software do not flag it.

Have you ever heard of "hacker defender" rootkit?

I'm curious about that trojan, but wouldn't that infect me?
Never heard of "hacker defender".

Hacker Defender root kit is really good and very easy to configure/install. It will let you run any program you want on the target machine and its completely undetectable. The only way to know its there is to boot into a different OS (linux livecd for example) and read the disc.

The file will only infect you if you run it. I have one with a non destructive payload that I can send if you wish. It only makes your machine a zombie and installs adware. Its hard to have copies in the wild that aren't detected by AV. Most of the files I keep are too old to be useful.
Thanks for the heads up.

Now that the nation has wised up the to foul play hidden within 'Britney Spears Naked' emails, dirty, virus-making PC hackers have turned to using our good pal Mario as the cover for their malicious code.

The new email virus, referred to as Romario-A, lets users play a version of Super Mario Bros. on their PC, which keeps you occupied as it gets to work screwing with security and spreading itself to your mates using any email addresses it finds.

Look out for the subject "Hi There, Do You Like Mario Bross ? Test it, and you'll like it ;] !", which just screams "I'm a virus", we reckon. Mainly because they've spelt 'Bross' wrong.

I suppose I can't really say much for this other than, "Bross"?

LOL, this has been brought up. in not such eloquence. Smile

haha, dial-up strikes again. I'd beat the game before that thing even got halfway onto my computer.

Who doesn't have this on their calculator or emu, or nes yet?
very interesting way to spread a virus around. How do you kill a flying raccoon Mario again??? Where's that darn Piranha plant?
It has been merged. =D

Anyhoo, I don't read my emails. D:
Ooooh thought it was gonna be something exciting like.. a virus that makes Mario dance around your screen randomly or something Sad
does it play the 'Game Over' Music when your hard drive is fully screwed up? Does it replace your wallpaper with 'Game Over' or 'Sorry your Princess is in another castle'?

That would be one awesome virus? jk Smile

An interesting way to spread a virus...who can resist Super Mario Bross?
