BLOG - A Sony developed prototype computer board that utilizes the PlayStation 3 Cell chip is set to be unveiled for the first time next week.
According to PC Advisor, The 'Cell Computing Board' combines the power of the Cell’s microprocessor and RSX graphics processor resulting in a high-power computing platform that goes beyond the power of the Cell chip alone.
The new board will be shown next week at SIGGRAPH, a show that will focus on the computer graphics industry, and Sony has promised to demonstrate real-time processing of '4K images', which are four times the resolution of HDTV.
While it’s all a little bit technical, CVG speculates that the use of the PS3 chip in the new computing board could be set to boost PC gaming, or just result in the need to buy new TV’s to handle the super-high-level resolutions.
