Analyst Michael Pachter believes development difficulties on PS3 forced Take-Two to delay the highly Grand Theft Auto IV for both PS3 and Xbox 360.
"We think it is likely that the Rockstar team had difficulty in building an exceptionally complicated game for the PS3, and failed to recognize how far away from completion the game truly was until recently," Pachter said in a statement.
"We think it is also likely that Take-Two had a contractual commitment to Sony that it would not favor competitor Microsoft by launching the Xbox 360 version of GTA IV prior to launching the PS3 version, and believe that any delay of the PS3 version necessitated a delay of the Xbox 360 version," he added.
The analyst also criticized the timing of the delay being that the game was originally slated for release only 10 weeks from now. As reported yesterday, GTA4 is now expected in April 2008 at the earliest.
Pachter's opinions come at a time when several third-party developers, benchmark tests, and even Sony's own admittance that the PS3 is harder than the Xbox 360 when it comes to developing games given the former's propriety hardware.

Hm.. This may not be a bad thing. I mean, im not exactly desperate for the game. But the more time they get with the game the better. I wouldn't want an un-finished game.
So the Xbox 360 uses standard DVDs and therefore developers can't fit as much as they might like to on a disc unlike the PS3's Blu-Ray discs, but the PS3 is much harder to develop for than the Xbox 360. Every system has its drawbacks.
I just find it very odd that if it's the PS3 version that's holding things up, why not release the 360 version and start making some cash off of the game. We're not being told something here...

Because they want to release both version of the game at the same time to be fair on all GTA fans? I don't know, but it sucks.
I think GTA fans who chose the PS3 over the 360 would feel really ripped off if it was released so much earlier on the 360 considering the series began and has stayed mainly loyal to Sony consoles.

other than GTA4, i havent heard of any 360 games being delayed. bioshock is a "best game" and it's coming out this month.

I'm not too bothered by this, and I don't think people who have a PS3 OR a 360 should either. I mean, look at the fall lineups, both consoles have strong lineups, and tons of great games we want to play. Isn't it better to have this to break up that awful March-May area where there's often times a slump? We'd be better able to concentrate solely on this game itself. Perhaps there's something untold, that added features to make the PS3 version play better are being added because of Blu-ray?
