Dave Karraker from SCEA recently responded to the mostly confirmed rumors of a rumbling Sixaxis controller by stating, basically, no such controller exists. He did confirm that better motion-sensing controllers were in the works, but downplayed it as more of a controller update than a new controller. He said that "[Sony] recently sent out to the development community some new prototypes that have a slightly enhanced sensitivity for the analog sticks and the motion sensing within the Sixaxis controller ... This is not a new controller, but is part of the normal development and evolution of controllers."

While this may seem disheartening, this may be a PR tactic utilizing semantics. Rumble, as far as controllers are concerned, involve rotating hammer weights, causing the controller to shake. That feature is not coming to the PS3. But Karraker might have been dancing around the word rumble, when the proper term is TouchSense technology. Know what we're saying? Of course, maybe we're wrong. But we like dancing, too, Sony!

Sony can't make there minds..
ugh... poopy sony i want my controllers to shake Big Grin
Wonder why they can't just give us a straight answer. Why is it with Businesses they always tell you one thing and mean another?
Aah well. Im sure we will get over rumble.
I wonder if there's still some legal matters with the company who sued them over rumber a couple years ago? Maybe they got out of that issue, but said they wouldn't sure the same kind of rumble?

This really doesn't matter to me so much, but there's been so much speculation...I wonder if they're going to surprise with this?
Sony denied recent reports in speaking to GamePro that rumble-enabled PS3 controllers are on the way. The company did acknowledge motion-sensing enhancements for the Sixaxis controller, however.

"We have not added rumble [to PS3], and have no announcements regarding this feature," said Dave Karraker, Sony's director of corporate communications.

Karraker did confirm that developers are receiving better motion-sensing controllers, though he downplayed the news.

"From time to time, we make minor enhancements to the controllers for our platforms," he said. "We recently sent out to the development community some new prototypes that have a slightly enhanced sensitivity for the analog sticks and the motion sensing within the Sixaxis controller.

"This is not a new controller, but is part of the normal development and evolution of controllers," he maintained.

Sony has been widely criticized for omitting rumble on the PS3, a technology that has been a staple to game controllers since Nintendo first introduced it in 1996 with the release of the Nintendo 64.

In February, Sony's Phil Harrison marginalized rumble when saying, "I think [rumble] was a last generation feature; it's not a next-generation feature."
sony us i know well be playing MGS4 with my rumbleaxis Wink
well, i bet the majority of gamers think that phil harrison is wrong about it.

of course, I am not a majority, so my opinion may not be everyone's.

phil harrison needs to play rush 2 for n64. why would you not want the controller rumbling right out of your hands when you steer the race car on the extremely tight corner?
Oh, silly Philly.

Rumble is teh last gen. So why do two of the three next gen consoles have the feature?

Ah well, eventually we'll see a rumble PS3 control.
Rumble isn't _neccisary_, and it IS last gen, but still, it's something that's greatly used and appriciated, and should be included in PS3 at some point down the road. It's not like it's that hard. However, understand that the reason it wasn't included, was not because of the lawsuit (they can always make rumble another way), but because it disrupts the motion sensor.

Oh, you might say, well, Wii does it fine. Wii is a whole differen't ball game. The Wii motion sensor is actually not as sensitive as the PS3's Sixaxis sensor. The Sixaxis uses advanced gyrations the Wii doesn't have (a lot of the Wii is based on RF signaling as well.) Now, that's no detriment to the Wii, as it's working out very well, and the controller is obviously a better form factor for the gameplay, but still, the Wii controlller used a sort of "budget" design scheme.

In any case, I've yet to see a compelling title where Sixaxis outdoes the use for rumble. Worst case scenario, they could have Sixaxis, and in games that don't need it, the rumble could be active instead? What do you think of that idea?
i thought rumble was 5th gen... looks at rumble pack and dual shock controller.... anywho... with the ps3´s sixaxis shizzle the rumble might affect it. i know people will say "so then why does the wii have rumble?" i think its becuase you dont have to have the rumble on with the wii and because the contoller is desgined differently.
NO NO NO NO NO TO EVERYONE WHO SAYS IT ISN'T NEEDED

How about in Motorstorm when your car explodes and pieces go everywhere? I want rumble then!
