Full Version: New Motion Sensing Handheld being Worked On?

Nintendo has filed a new patent for a motion-sensing portable games console, hinting the next step in handheld gaming beyond the DS.

As the patent, filed on March 30, explains: "The housing [console] incorporates an XY-axis acceleration sensor to detect an acceleration in an X-axis and Y-axis direction and a Z-axis contact switch to detect an acceleration in a Z-axis direction."

This is basically just like the Wii Remote, so that means if you move the console it will know about it.

The new console would detect "tilt amount, movement amount, impact amount or the like". In more technical rambling, the patent goes on to confirm that on-screen action will be effected by the amount of motion applied by the player.

Although the diagrams, which can be seen to the right, show a Game Boy-style console, you should only take this as a basic representation of a handheld console.

Motion-sensing portable games were inevitable - but at least now we know Nintendo is hard at work to make it happen.

I enjoy reading articles like these. Naturally, I hope that this is true and that Nintendo are indeed planning on creating a motion sensing DS-like console, but I can't help but feel worried.

I feel that for handheld consoles to evolve naturally, a few things must stay standard. That being able to hold a console quietly in the back of a car or bus, while not making too much of a distraction is a basic accepted law of the lever these days, and I would be weary about change.

If this were found to be a common truth than I would at least hope that the motion portion of the console would not be it's finer marketing point, or critics will be calling on some more originality from the Japanese MNC, but being Nintendo, they usually have a way of getting things done. But the real question here is whether they will be able to keep their new found market, which they gained with their Touch! Generations branding, and if they can, a potentially lost battle will be won gracefully.

I hope Nintendo go with this. With the combination of touch screen and motion sensing. It would be amazing. Smile
I don't think to much movement will be involved if this happens. You will probably just need to tilt it a little to perform the movements. Heck what do I know.

Sounds like a great idea though.
That's so awesome, and that design is in the form of a gameboy. Next-Gen gameboy anyone? I wonder what the slogan for this would be...
No it's just probably a placeholder, Nintendo could hardly give away their product details
I bet its some sort of wii accessory thats gonna come out later on
I saw this on Gonintendo yesterday. I think its sweet and I will probably buy it.
Thats if it ever hits the stores.
im not that thrilled really. I like motion control on a console, the Wii is great, but i dont know if i really want it in a handheld. I realize that nintendo is pursuing their "lets change the way people think about gaming" thing but motion controls in a handheld just seems to out of place for me. Besides, i often play my DS in a car or while flying. Motion controls wont work that great in those situations. This will have to be really, really amazing for me to come around to it.

Ahh yes yes thats right. I forgot about that whole store thing...

Looks promising. I'll go for almost anything if it's from Nintendo.
motion-sensing in the handhelda? wouldnt that be overdoing?
I suppose it would be a bit overwhelming. It would certainly be intuitive, but it could attract a lot of unwanted attention, A.K.A. blowing into the DS microphone.
lol i think it woul deffinetly be over welming 'cause like 1hand buttons second hand ------PictureNaughtylol second hand touch screen plussss we need to shake it werwe not ALL mutants lol your hand will look like this Ugh2they prob. patited it cause theres an extencion for it

lol. it really it a pointless feature for the most part.

It was alright at first, but I started feeling a bit Drowzy afterwards... I think the microphone should stay exclusive to communication from now on, rather than the aforementioned means.
It's for the Evolution, watch!
hmmm i like the idea but will shaking or moving the console not break concentrated eye contact with the screen? its fine for wii as you are not looking at the thing you are moving, i dont know but i can see a bad case of motion sickness arising from this lol
I don't think it'll be that great... Handhelds are for traveling if your in your car and you want to play you'll be bouncing a lot! it might say go down then you hit a bump it goes up instead and you get mad at the DS or whatever it is and you have to restart the level...
It sounds like a cool idea. We will have to wait and see how it turns out.
