Admin Edit - A lot of the reasoning behind creating this post was misunderstanding, And all issues have now been resolved. With sc7's permission, we are closing this thread.
The air outside was cold, but the buzz inside on the web was hotter than ever. It was the week following the release of the Wii. I came to Wiiloaded in search of where I could find a console (hopefully before the holidays). I joined a forum with some helpful members, some really nice people, who were all interested in generally the same topic. I created the “Good shipment info thread”, which, although now mostly defunct, helped MANY people get their Wiis. Not once, did I ever boast about my work in the thread. Long after I had gotten my own Wii, I assisted many more, even members who joined the site when they saw the thread, and only stuck around till they found a Wii. I was glad to help people, because searching for a console is one of the worst things I’ve ever had to do myself.
Now, times have changed. Everyone has their Wii, and some of us are enjoying them, while others wait patiently for our AAA titles to come out. Meanwhile, I continued to stay around, assisting people in the PC game forum, the tech forum, as well as the PS3 and 360 sections. I have education in application programming and specifically, 3d programming. I have a great deal of knowledge on how most of the technology in this industry works. I’m personally happy to share it with everyone.
Sadly, over the last 3 weeks, I’ve seen a tremendous decline in the quality of this forum. As someone who’s moderated and administered forums of this size, and greater, I grew greatly disappointed. My gripes became a series of events, and the personal damage and hurt is simply irreparable. It began about a week and a half ago. I made A (ONE) post “flaming” a member. I found this post to be harmless, especially since I’ve seen much worse come out of the more “favored” 11 year old members, and go under the radar. Yet I received a message stating that I “flamed” him. As I’ve stated on this matter, I did not find my post to be even remotely close to anything ever deemed flaming in any other forum I’ve ever moderated.
I am going to reiterate my case stated to Z6Joker9 on the matter when I first complained about the post. Firstly, I used almost no foul language, and the language I used was far less severe than some of the language coming out of, again, the mouths of 11 year olds on here. (Believe me, I can tell by the WONDERFUL sentence syntax some of these people use). Secondly, not a single part of my post was attacking him on any personal level. I simply stated that I disagreed with the way the member posted his information in his profile, and how I disagreed. I also mentioned that I didn’t like how his clowning around was again getting tolerated, and he was clearly getting a bias because some members know him from “Wiichat”.
Again, I’ve contributed a solid 500 posts to this place, and a good deal of them offer more help than any posts from some members who have 2,000+ posts. And I take no issue with anyone who has that many posts of less useful information, but I felt that I didn’t get shown respect from people who don’t contribute half the technological knowledge that I do. I put a great deal of effort into all of my posts. Yet, when I post one arguably rude post, which was far less severe than others that slip under the radar, I get a warning on the system without any verbal warning. I don’t care if that’s the “purpose” of it, as Joker has so stated, I work hard on my posts here, and to not even get the courtesy of a “chill” bothered me. True, there was an indirect warning from Charmander, but honestly, it doesn’t justify the lack of a personal warning. I could get past that.
However, recently, I’ve been delving more into the issue, and realized the poor treatment I received. I was warned by members, who are part of the mod staff, and I’ve never seen contribute any helpful materials. I’m not going to say every member should contribute technological information, as not every member has a degree in Computer Science. But I took offence to regular “chit-chat” members, as moderators, who really provide no help, laying down the hammer on me, showing no respect for the work I put into the community and help. Again, I may have only 500 posts, but they are undoubtedly the strongest of any member with 500 posts. I really don’t like to boast my own statistics, but I feel I am only doing so currently in the matter of self defense.
I was issued the warning by Sakura. I don’t personally ever recall talking to her, and I will not make a decision on the type of person she might be (I’ve heard she’s nice) from the warning. I’m absolutely disgruntled by the lack of appreciation showed to me with that warning, especially from someone who hasn’t really contributed knowledge. The other part I took issue with was that D4rkdrago0n saw the post, let it go, and then she came in AFTER him, and gave it a warning. My gripe later came with “linkzelda”. After I made a statement about it, and contacted joker, I was then threatened by linkzelda. Another “moderator”, who hasn’t contributed knowledge (which, as I’ve reiterated several times now, is not a problem in the lightest sense), proceeded to threaten me. Again, it’s as if these mods have not even seen my posts, and have no appreciation for the literally hours I’ve put into my posts. Her tone was completely unnecessary.
After contacting Z6Joker9, I was assured that in a measure of gratitude, the warnings would be removed (after working with d4rk to remove them). I was content with that, not on the basis of status, but on the basis of principle. When I came back a few hours later, I found myself being informed, a whole different tune from Joker. That the system was in place for that reason, and that the decision will be withheld. The only thing worse to me than getting the warning, was now being told is was going to be removed, and then it not happening. To me, I found this to be the ultimate sign of disrespect and lack of appreciation.
I was willing to ignore my beef with the greater part of the staff, until the last few days. I’ve noticed that more time goes into the sillier parts of the forum (OMG BAN TEH USER ABOVEZ U LOLZ!!!!!!1111eleven), and that no one seems to care about the information regarding the real topics. I guess it’s the large population of 11 year olds who have no attention span to make anything useful out of the site, and such get favored by the under experienced team of moderators. I am absolutely calling this out, because on NO forum (which I’ve been using since 1998) that I’ve ever been a moderator on, have mods EVER acted this unprofessionally towards their members. On the site I used to frequent, Devshed, was truly the prime example of how a web forum should be run. I’ll admit I have a hot temper, but when I moderated, I NEVER threatened users in such inappropriate ways. And the best way for a forum to flourish, is to give the benefit of the doubt initially to all offenders. I used to always give verbal warnings. Why? Because the authoritarian warning crackdown system almost unanimously clears out the members. It’s effectively the same as giving them a permanent ban. I’m one of the few who would actually stick out a warning on my name. There are too many moderators for so little active members. The main fact is that the admins are letting emotional, arrogant, immature teenagers run around with too much power. I’ll be damned if I’m going to take my degree, and be “disciplined” by a teenager.
I’ve spent a lot of time around the PS3 and 360 sections. As someone in the field of technology, I simply find them to be far more entertaining in regards to technological discussion, than the Wii sections. People often criticize my work, along with gft77 in that forum. So what that I favor the PS3, it’s not like I’m not helpful in other areas too. And today, greaerlee, a member and moderator who, again, often criticizes and is rude to other members, denounced my PS3 journal. I deliberately spent almost an hour and a half of my own time, after work, on that, to help educate people, and hopefully bring more people to the site. I get attacked for it reading like an infomercial. Never, have I EVER seen a group of people so ungrateful for the contributions of a member.
I am above personal attacks, so the people I have an issue with (mostly moderators, namely: Sakura, linkzelda, Z6joker9, I wish none of you harm, and the best of luck in your lives and the continuation of the site.) With that said, there are some people I’d like to personally thank for my stay here. Wenis, has just been a generally good guy, CMFQRZ (I know that’s not right), has also been a good guy. Others such as drew102e have been nice to me, as well as d4rkdrago0n, and gft77, who helped me with the PS3 journal thread (another timely contribution). Pizzaturdell and I once had an argument, and we solved it like gentlemen (and received a compliment from d4rkdrag0on for doing so), and moved on. We later got along, and helped me with a question in the film industry.
To all the other innocent standbyers, I’m sorry. I would like to apologize for any inconveniences my actions have caused to any of you. I’m also sorry that I can no longer contribute the knowledge I have. That said, so long as the mods don’t sink any LOWER and BAN me, my PM box will be open, so if you’d like to ask for my MSN messenger address via PM, I’d be glad to help you with anything technologically ANY time on MSN messenger, be it computer, software, or game related. I’ll set it to email notification, so I can log in when I get a new Private message.
Simply put, I’m too hurt, and too unappreciated around here by the ungrateful staff, which I’ve helped better the site for, and contribute to. I feel that I should waste no more of my time on this site. To all of you who have been good people, I owed you this explanation, because that’s the kind of man I am. Remember, the PM box is open, so long as the mods aren’t banning me for this. (Please note, there are no obscenities anywhere in this post, or flaming). To everyone, even those I’ve taken issue with. Goodbye, good luck, and God bless.
Sincerely,
Steve
