On September 17, 2007 John Woo Presents Stranglehold: Collector's Edition for the PS3 will be released. Not only will gamers have what many consider to be an amazing game, but they'll also get something very special...A Blu Ray version of John Woo's "Hard Boiled" on the disc as well.
Just imagine the possibilities with something like this. Image buying a Spider-Man game and getting a Blu Ray version of the previous movie right on the disc also? I think this is a way for the PS3 to really shine, and most people would agree that getting a game and a good movie for the price of $69 (only $10 over the normal game price for the PS3 and 360) is quite a deal.
On the flip side of the coin, imagine purchasing the movie Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer on Blu Ray, and getting a level or two of an upcoming Fantastic 4 PS3 game on the disc as well.
Sure, you might say that not everyone owns a PS3 so the above might be a little crazy, but think how much promotional value a game company could get out of doing something like that. Imagine how many more PS3's you could sell if you knew you'd be getting deals like these every-so-often.
I like what's happening here....gamers are finally getting their moneys worth, and that can never be bad.
hmm that is pretty damn sweet gettin a blu-ray movie for only ten bucks, im totally down, this is mos def a great idea...
I totally agree Angel. I remember when Van Helsing came out on DVD and you got to play a little of the game with an Xbox. This could be even bigger though. Like with this game, the movie that led up to it's on the blu ray disc, and I can see that happening for a bunch of other games too.
The term "Inspired by" comes to mind...this game was inspired by the events in this movie, so here's the movie too

damn! that's a good idea! if this starts happening I may be forced to buy a PS3.
Woooah value for money, this could make up for the expenses paid out for the console.. this news coupled up with MGS series, tempts me very much to get one now. Only problem is, most movie tie-in games are children films made by THQ, which don't really interest me.. maybe a new bond film/game in the future? Now that would be cool.
What happened to buying a game for the gaming? I absolutely hate the idea of being charged more for stuff I wouldn't necessarily buy. This is just one more step to my doom and gloom mentality on the gaming industry. Why pay more for a DVD movie that contains a game demo, which should be free?
I guess as long as they release versions of the game that only remove the “bonus” movie and drop the price down to “normal” game prices, I’d have no problem with it. But the minute they pack in bonus content for the movie edition games only, I’ll be pissed.
This just furthers my opinion that blu-ray discs (which helped increase the cost gaming), wasn’t necessary. If you have room for both a high def game and movie with all the surround, it sounds like overkill. And why then am I paying $60 for a game like Madden when it could have easily been released on a regular DVD/laser and run just fine?
Its a great idea and could be very succesfull. But like Harmonica I hope they don't force you to pay the extra money for the game just to get the movie. I would like just the game for the usual price. Unless I really wanted the movie that came with it.

First Id like you to explain how Blu Ray increased the cost of gaming when Microsoft's 360 uses standard DVDs and the price of their games are the same as PS3's.
Also I'd like to show you what the same version of the game comes with on the 360:
This special edition of John Woo Presents Strangehold includes a bonus disc jam-packed with extras, including a behind-the-scenes documentary, , extended cinematic scenes which didn't make it into the final game, an MTV Studio Visit, a concept art progression featurette from concept art to final game, and an insiders look at sounds design.

I'm not sure what your real beef with Sony and Blu Ray is, but the simple remedy is that you don't have to buy a PS3. You will though be paying the same amount for 360 games if you choose to have one of those, but in the case of this special edition game, you just won't be getting as much content for your money.
Let's also not forget that you can buy just the game for $59.99 on both the PS3, 360, and PC.
well yeah they shouldn't try to force it. It should be in the collector's edition or something...
actually gft we were talking about future games that do this kind of thing. We all knew that this was a collector's edition...or at least I did.
Then hopefully future titles that do have "movies" or whatever on them will be just like the game in question and give gamers a choice whether they want to spend $69.99 for a game and movie or $59.99 for just a game.
We'll keep our fingers crossed.
I quite like this idea, as long as extra films aren't forced on us if we just want to buy the game. Only problem is, licensed games tend to be rubbish.
Agreed Nap...I'd like to see things like those Anime shorts that have been made for Heavenly Sword added to the game disc...I think it adds more to the experience while taking nothing away from the game itself.
As long as the following don't occur:
1. The "conent" gets used to up the prices because of real development issues.
2. We don't go back to FMV based play.
3. We're not required to sit through 10 minute videos after every checkpoint
4. Basically, the video is not intertwined into the gameplay.
Other than that, I can't see how it could be negative.
Yeah, I was just thinking about a menu on the start screen that lets you go to a menu and watch those kind of anime clips that have been created. Nothing really to do with messing with game play and such, but you are correct, nothing like that should ever take the place of game play or make up for a poorly constructed game.

Precisely my point.
But anime=Waste of time.
