Basically, when ever I try to download anything, whether it be from Limewire, Torrents (all for legal reasons ^_^) or even sometimes just something of the likes of Download.com.. my laptop will freeze for no apparent reason, every single time. I've asked on other sites before and done some research and haven't really found anything..

Has this ever happened to anyone else? Or does anyone have any idea on how I can ressolve this issue? Replies will be much appreciated.
Weeow, this has happened to many people but not me, its obvious limewire, is a bad boy, and messes up your computer as does all illegal downloading programs, best thing to do delete limewire, and dont get torrents, and start paying for your stuff.

What do i do, this has never happened to me, and my whole life iv'e been using only bearshare . Bahahaa. BEARSHARE

You use bearshare, therefore I love you.

Mike, check RAM and system memory and such and maybe consider upgrading your laptop?

I use bearshare, and i love me too Smile
Lol was hoping for a.. cheaper way to solve my problem Smile based on the fact I have no moola.. wouldn't be surprised if no-one knew a free way of fixing it but worth a try nonetheless.
Screw limewire, get bearshare Smile
How about
System specs?
Os?
Antivirus/antispyware software installed?

They all play a factor.
Firewalls block a lot of Limewire apps, and no, Bearshare is nice, but is way too big as RAM files go, and has barely any stuff I like. Torrents FTW. You know what you're getting because of comments/ratings on the tracker sites
yeah bearshare and i love sunera too Wink
no *shakes head appallingly*
Rid of Windows = Problem solved Big Grin JK

Try running a virus scan....

How do I access the specifications? *mind blank*
Os - not sure what that means sorry man 0_o
AntiVirus = Norton, though I have tried without having an AntiVirus installed also (obviously stupid to do, but wanted to give it a go).

Tried turning off firewalls (including the one that comes with the computer and no luck). How I wish I could use Torrents...

Haha, virus scan doesn't do much either sadly.
Thanks for the suggestions so far.

System spec's is just like the RAM, memory, graphics card etc.

Click start, then click on run and type in Dxdiag and it should come up and show you.

Os = Operating System like Vista or Xp

Windows is actually a well written OS, take it from me, someone who's in the software industry.  The problem with Windows is the plethora of software and hardware it supports.  From my work, Mac OS X is more stable when combined with all the software/hardware it needs (mac compatibile hardware such as it has drivers for Intel, or a proper EEPROM for PowerPC).

Most of OS X's crashes are OS related, most of Windows' crashes are 3rd party software related.  Most of Linux's issues are also 3rd party related.  I've said time and time again, Windows NT is the best operating system kernel out there, it's undoubtedly the fastest, and it's got pre-emptive multitasking and protected memory features that darwin (OS X BSD kernel), isn't close to getting.  Linux's issues come from the fact that you have to run Kernel>Xorg>Window manager.  Linux is more stable than OS X or Windows (but not BSD) for servers, only when you run it as a plain kernel, with CLI, and added on CLI based tools (like apache).  Windows doesn't have this option, but if it did, It'd be just as secure (GUI and GUI apps are the buggiest)

What's the issue with Windows, is that it still holds compatibility for old specifications in the Win32 API.  (Things such as Wizard 97, for example).  Forutunately, Vista, moved in the right direction, by taking drivers out of Ring0, and putting them into the userspace.  This allows for drivers to be inherently more stable, and not to bring the whole system down when something happens.  It also requires less reboots for installations of various things.  Windows is also no more of a resource hog than OS X.  To this day, OS X still has major memory management issues.  Both Vista and OS X use almost all of your idle memory, why?  Because they're fetching data in anticipation of usage, so applications launch quicker.  In Windows Vista it's called superfetch.

Anyway, if anyone wants to know more about this specifically, ask a specific question, and I'll answer it.

@Wiired, For your problem, download and install this:
PC Wizard 2007

At the front Window, take a screenshot with printscreen, and paste and save with paint.  Upload it to imageshack, and that should give me what I'd need to know.

You should also ditch norton for Avast.  Avast 4 Home Edition is free, and FAR better than Norton.  I've been running Avast for 3 years now.  Despite what you may think, Norton is a resource hog, and fairs poorly on all VirusBulliten tests for detection rates.  The only one I'm aware that does worse is Windows Live OneCare.

Thankyou very much for your help, you will receive a PM shortly. If you also have a link for Avast, it would be very much appreciated Smile

If you have some spare cash and you need AV but want to play games, get NOD32, that AV is beyond every other I've tried. Quickest, Smallest, Most Updated.

Firewalls block shit, you need an AV to stop malware getting on, a firewall will only stop it from calling home, and that's only if the malware isn't smart enough to close your firewall software.

Hardware firewall ftw ^_^

ALWIL Software

You have to register your email for a free key first, then download the free version, and that free key is good for 14 months. (I don't understand why they do it like this).

Bearshare doesn't used java. So I'm surprised, unless it has a memory allocation leak. (In such a minimal size program.)

If you're low on diskspace, you should turn off system restore (running Me, Xp or Vista), as that takes up considerable levels of ram.
