My question: To my UK companions, have any of you seen this item before?
If not, that means it should be released soon, or I'd have to import it from JPN.
There are a number of devices that allow this functionality.
$35 shipped gets you an R4 which can do more than just play mp3's (homebrew, backups, video, e-books, etc).
I saw those too, but I really just want that device. Just to have it. =]

my local walmart had a DSL mp3/video player thingy (uses CF cards, yuck) on clearance.
I prefer R4's, not only do they have a lot of features, it's also very easy to use and is actually really cheap.

dont mean t be funny but the DS would make a bad mp3 its too clunky and the battery life is bad enough as it is.....

Question, will the R4 work with macs?
The R4 is a mod it plays movies songs and DS games there is also a mod called M3 it also plays movies, songs and games. And I think they both run by micro SDs (well I know the M3 does). If Mac has a usb port or if it has a place were you can put in SDs then the R4 will work on Macs.
