Much has been made about the X360's hardware failure rate (which Microsoft won't release hard numbers on) and the accompanying lawsuits/warranty extensions, so it's been interesting how few stories we've heard about PlayStation 3s dying. Turns out the reason we haven't heard about widespread PS3 hardware issues is because, well, there aren't any.
Speaking with Spong at this week's Edinburgh Interactive Festival, Chris Deering, the founder of SCEE mentioned that the failure rate for the PlayStation 3 is a teeny-tiny 0.2%. Industry standard for hardware failure rates on consoles has historically been 3-5%, so the PS3's fantastically low failure rate really showcases how well Sony designed the system. Old Ken may have been crazy, but he was one hell of an engineer.

Not too shabby at all. We've said it before, but it's true...The PS3 is a well-built machine.
Dayum, much better then the 360 (but who isn't really according to the amount of their first consoles that failed - even mine had to be sent back). But I suppose thats good reassurance for customers - the odds are that you're console will last.
A lot of people make the crazy comment about how there are more 360's on the market and that's why they have a larger hardware failure %, but if you do the simple math...having a larger number of consoles out actually helps you. It's like 500 system out of 1,000,000 or 500 systems out of 10,000,000. The one with more systems sold will actually have a smaller %

Um...maybe this is because most of them are sitting on our shelves doing little more than playing the occassional Blu-Ray since, nine months in to it, they STILL don't many decent games to play! Last time I buy one at launch if they're going to have such a paltry launch line up.
yeah i think its cuz i dont play mine as much o well at least it will be there when MGS4 comes out

Well atleast when you actually put that much money into getting a PS3 you know its not going to be faulty.

I look at it this way...the PS3 is well-built and I think anyone who would dispute that basically doesn't care to know the truth.
I'd rather have a slow roll-out of games then a system that needs to be sent back to the manufacturer for repair.
so you finally got one? cograts.
.2% is still a little to high for me. i'll wait till the faulty rate drops to .05%.
I'd have to disagree, I think 0.2% is really good. I mean how long would you have waited to buy your 360 if you were waiting for a .05% failure rate?
I knew that Sony built some very good hardware (as well as Nintendo), but reading this proves it. They may sell their consoles for a high price, but they made sure that it was well built to withstand the test of time.

I am happy to see that they're performing well. Wish I could have had faith in the system BEFORE I bought it (and a warranty). There's a reason the previous iterations were often referred to as the POS and the POS2. lol They may have been great in some instances, but they had a LOT of issues.
Your totally right alstensby. The PS3 is showing that Sony has learned from previous mistakes made with the PS and PSTwo. I think that's very encouraging. Oddly enough, I waited in line the first day the PS2's came out...got a launch day one, and have had 0 issues with it, and it still plays great to this day.
Very good point.
Wow...
Thats pretty amazing actually...
Compared to the 360's 33% that is really kick some butt....

interesting. so i guess the 360 is this generation's PS2.

I would have to disagree. I don't recall any serious hardware issues with the Xbox, so it seems Microsoft has done much worse on their reliability with the 360. The difference between PS1 and PS2 compared to the PS3 is that Sony learned from their mistakes and made the PS3 very reliable. Perhaps Microsoft will increase their hardware quality with their next system.
thats good to hear.
Compare that to the 360s lol
