BusinessWeek weighs in on the looming 3-way video game console battle coming this holiday season in their article titled "Console Makers: Move It or Lose It." The article touches on each console's pre-battle position in what Pacific Crest Securities senior research analyst Evan Wilson calls "the most competitive holiday season in the history of video games."

They feel that the outlook for Microsoft seems strong, but there are a few concerns:

Microsoft may be the one embarrassed if it's not able to solidify its No. 1 position this holiday season. "If this lineup of titles can't move boxes off the store shelves come January," writes David Cole, president of gaming research firm DFC Intelligence, "we will have to seriously revaluate Microsoft's long-term position in the marketplace." If that happens, Cole believes Microsoft could be in danger of becoming a distant third in the battle for market share in the video game business.

BW points out that Sony may not have enough coming to prevail this holiday:

Although Sony has some noteworthy game launches coming up, including the reintroduction of the classic Warhawk franchise, two of its heaviest hitters—Metal Gear Solid 4 and the next Final Fantasy game—won't be on store shelves until next year. That could be a problem for Sony and provide a competitive advantage for Microsoft, says Pacific Crest analyst Wilson.

Much like the rest of the non-gaming press, BW doesn't seem to have much in the way of negative statements about Nintendo and the Wii, but we didn't need Business Week to tell us that Nintendo is going to have a killer holiday season. What's more important is that gamers will win this one.

For every generation, a war will follow. But I don't really care either, as long as I can play all the games that I want on all the consoles that I can afford. Big Grin

Get all consoles and don't be a fanboy.

Its a win-win.
BW says that the Wii has sold under 10 million consoles. However, when I look at VGChartz.com I see that it is .02 million away. And the update says that it's only 29k behind the 360.

Can anyone see a bypass in the next week?

Exactly

I wish I HAD $626 to buy a PS3.
Nintendo is Nintendo! They will always lead in gaming so they will most likely bypass 360 in a number of weeks. I own all three "next gen" consoles and I think I play the wii alot more because its like a party system, I crack it out when friends and family are over and its just so much fun, I think that is why its got so many sales. Nintendo makes everyone happy.
It is, with the aforementioned facts and all the big games form Nintendo.
all three???

who can afford that?
Everyone if you space it out correctly. I bought a Wii at launch, I'll buy a PS3 next year and then an XB360 the year after. Why not? All three consoles are amazing in their own ways, but all have their own negative aspects.
and then xtra controllers/accessories for each...

it would be great, but i could never justify the expense
I can.

Because I'm still doubting the Wii's ability to give a constant flow of quality games, there has been none since launch that are worth playing again and again. And I am seeing games exclusive to both 360 and PS3 that I must have, therefore its justified.

your already looking at over 2000 bucks, if you include games and some may needed accesseries. i'll only get the PS3 later on.

only if money was no concern and thats a big if

Money really is no concern if I spread the 3 of them out over seperate years.
the way i set it the Wii and PS3 are on two different ends of the spectrum and the XBOX360 falls in between. but theres no games for 360 i like.
Its not so much the consoles but everything else that determines whether you'll buy one. I, for example, would love to get a 60GB PS3 before they all disappear, mainly because I want backwards compatibility AND the next gen all in one package. Can I afford it? Not right now.

As for games coming out/not coming out that are only worth playing through once, I disagree. I don't take my used games into EB Games or their competitors, so I have many, MANY games. After weeks, months or years the nostalgia kicks in and I'm playing them again.
I usually concentrate on one of them with games rather than all 3, but it's really up to how much you make.

I don't do this anymore, I learned my lesson on the Gamecube from crappy games like Starfox Adventures and Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles. I now rent games first and play them, if I want to play them more after the night I have them out for then I buy them... that is yet to happen with any of the games I've rented.
