Full Version: Button mashing is primitive, unecessary

Good ole Jack from Infendo once again captures my thoughts and reguritates them better than i could:

“I’ll never, ever push a button to throw a block or make a hard tackle ever again.”

That’s what popped into my head as I played a Striker’s Cup match in Mario Strikers Charged the other day. It took until this afternoon to recognize just how important an “a-ha” moment this truly minor event really was.

I’ve called this Wii thing a paradigm shift in the past, but that’s kind of bombastic. Instead I’ll say it’s like my mind just clicked. Pushing a button to do something like check an opponent feels primitive to me now, like picking up an original Tiger LCD game and expecting to have fun.

The thing is I’ve been playing Strikers for the better part of the past two weeks and I can’t pinpoint the exact moment when pushing a little circular button became so unappealing to me. Instead of me being in control of the game, a button press makes it feel as though I am asking permission to do something in-game. What surprised me, though, was this didn’t happen with Wii Sports. Wii Sports was revolutionary, yes, but it took an arcadey GameCube-inspired game like Strikers to show me that even the “run of the mill” titles will also be changed by the Wiimote. I know the ferocity of my waggling doesn’t affect the hit (or does it?), but now at least when someone’s being really cheap I can let out a little more frustration than what a button press would allow me to do. Regardless, I’ll never play a bowling game that doesn’t allow me to fake bowl ever again either.

I imagine that, for many people, for a variety of reasons, this moment hasn’t come yet. That’s too bad. Hurry up and jump in, the water’s fine.

This guy has a point. Its so much better to do motions instead of mashing buttons.
Yeah, i do enjoy motioning for a tackle instead of a button smash...

feels so much better!!
haha, while I don't really have a problem with the "frustration"...and I don't necessarily get more "immersed".... but I prefer motions just the same.

LOL@ how much this guy loathes buttons... you know the wii still has them... XP
I actually prefer hitting the buttons when playing Twilight Princess and Ultimate Alliance. I guess I just suck.

Yeah i did miss the B button mashing in TP but the new style dose have style...

honestly...i was already moving my controllers around when i was pressing buttons on older consoles, it just didn't register on the screen ^^;

although i do enjoy simply moving my arms around to get things done, pressing buttons made me feel like i had more control over what i was doing. i think it's just a force of habit to press a button, for me, so hopefully after a while i'll get used to using my wiimote on games without compulsively pressing the A and B buttons...
I love the motion sensing controls of the Wiimote, but since I also play on my PS2 just as much, I actually like both controls in their own way. The PS2 controls feel right at home (since I have had it a lot longer than the Wii), whereas the Wiimote controls are new, but very exciting at the same time.
This doesn't hold true all over the board. Games like Smash Bros. will never be good with motion controls. Fighting games in general NEED buttons. Motions just aren't responsive enough to pull off quick combos.

Otherwise, I agree with everything else he wrote, although I don't think button-mashing is primitive.
i love the fact that every generation just tries to get rid of the last one as fast as possible. Like the "button mashing" argument in this gen. It happened to rumble and d-pads.

I just don't understand why people feel they need to call things "primitive"... you know the writer was the guy who owned every last gen console. XP
There are some games for the Wii, well only one, that left a indent in my thumb XD

I disagree, if fighting games will ever become popular among non-video gaming people, the buttons have got to go. Sure, todays technology (Wii-motion) ain't up to snuff to completely replicate fighting motion, but technology is constantly evolving. That's not to say a motion based fighting game made on the wii can't be good. DBZ did a few things right with motion control that leaves me hopeful.

Well, maybe in the future they'll be able to deliver responsive motion controls. But my example, Smash Bros. will stink with the wiimote. Pinpoint accuracy is part of hard-hitting combos. And I'm not so sure we'd be able to hit with such accuracy via motion controls.

However, Sakurai is free to prove me wrong with Smash motion controls. I just won't get my hopes up.

As long as they always offer the option between the two, then I shall be happy.
Well, depends on what type of fighting game it is too.

If it was a WWE (XP) or boxing sort of thing. It'd be pretty popular methinks. A suped up version of Wii-sports if you will.
Depends what the game is, sometimes buttons are better, sometimes motion is better, and thank god the Wii has both.
It all depends on the game for me. Some games I love the motion control but for others I prefer pressing buttons. Take Sonic for example. I would much rather had the old controls then tilting forward to run and up to jump. Sure I can do it but it's so much easier and more comfortable to do it the old fashioned way. I'm sure I'll break out my GC controllers for SSBB when it arrives as well (too bad I don't have any wavebirds...) For games like Wii Sports I don't think playing with buttons would be a fraction of the fun and I love the motion controls. It all depends on the game.
Of course Manaburn. I agree with what you said, WiiSports would have been a downright boring and plain experience if it were played via buttons as opposed to the Wiimote.

Like I said, so long as they offer the option for games that would work well with either control method then I'll be happy.

I still don't think its right to say button-mashing is primitive though...
Lets just hope it goes the way of the DS. Touch when it works, otherwise it's gone.

Which leads to, did we ever have this "button mashing" thing on PSP v. DS? I wasn't in the war as much as I am nowadays....can't remember.
If people want to mash, mash. It's not a big deal either way, really.
He has a great point.  Games weren't made to press the buttons and see what happens.  They were made with strategy in mind.  I know someone who button mashes in SSBM. Take it from me, it doesn't work well.
