A new Wii..
I'm sure there are some mod chips that allow for US play, but the US Metroid disc installs an update before playing it that supposedly ruins modded Wiis. So damn if you do. I suggest downloading Super Metroid whenever you get that in the interum and exercising patience (or importing a US wii...).

I suggest reading my post before doing this. Just a warning.

I am pretty sure there is a thread somewhere from awhile back that tells you how to make your wii region free, i'll see if i can find it since work is boring.

I can't find anything decent, found one but the link is dead. But i would suggest trying a modchip, i believe that they allow you to break the region codes.

tbh i am not sure since mine is not modded and probably don't plan to until wii's become more readily available and then probably only so i can put linux on it, the only one i really know of would be wiikey, you could use google to search some more and could probably get more info than i could tell you, that and try taking a look in the modification and customizations sub-forum, usually some pretty good info in there reguarding that.

Most mod chips will allow you to play imported games, but yes, the NTSC version of MP3 does install a small update when it loads the first time. These out of region updates sometimes cause problems (from simple menu lockouts which are fixed when a new region specific update comes out, all the way to full bricking), and sometimes they cause no problems at all. I've had two different import games load updates that did not cause any trouble, but I cannot tell you what the US MP3 does to PAL systems.

I wouldn't recommend doing it. I would buy an America Wii since we're getting all the good games first anyways. It'll just pay off later on...
