Retro Studios, the developer behind the long-awaited new Wii Adventure game Metroid Prime 3: Corruption has decided to hang up its boots on Metroid indefinitely as from the launch of the third and final game in the Metroid Prime series.
"We are taking a break from the Metroid series and from Samus. I'm sure there'll be other titles created, but as far as the Retro Studios is concerned, we're taking a break for a little bit," says series director at Retro, Mark Pacini, in
a recent interview.
This begs the question, since Retro announced long ago that Metroid Prime 3 was going to be the last in the Prime chapter, does this mean that Retro always intended only to develop this series, or will they eventually come back and recreate Metroid, perhaps start afresh with a new chapter and a renewed story? Retro have already proved themselves as an exceptionally talented studio, and no doubt Nintendo will want a prize asset lying around doing nothing. And with the Japanese giant gladly broadcasting their discreet "Something for Everyone" message to the masses, there will be no "goodbye and good luck" to a
9.5-rated game.
Of course, soon the curiosity will be killing us. What will Retro Studios do next? And will it be for Wii or DS, or possibly both? Whatever becomes of Retro, I believe we all wish them well, and likewise can hardly wait to play the results.

why did you use the word indefinitely if they're only taking a break? Indefinitely would mean that they're never coming back to Metroid. That would be a damn shame.
still, I hope they develop something original for the DS. It's time they tried out their strengths on the handheld platform.

No, indefinitely means for an unnamed amount of time
I wonder if they are going to create a new franchise or something. But its going to be interesting to see whats in store next for Metroid, since Prime is done, if they are going to stick to keeping it a 'FPA' or what. I just really hope they don't go 3rd person... there are only a handful of games that are good 3rd person, and I don't think metroid would be one of them.
Metroid should go back to its 2D roots again now.
<3 2D Metroids.
Keep the 2d for handhelds
See how the word "define" is in indefinitely?
And I agree with LM-X
super metroid.....maybe I'll have to dust off the rom again. hahahah
Well once you've created a game as being soo good as prime 3 is, you gotta shoot for even bigger and better, and I don't think anything 2d will be better than how mp3 is
Super Metroid > Metroid Prime 3.
I'd love to see Nintendo contact the guys turning Metroid Prime into a 2D remake and giving them a hand then putting it up on the WiiWare channel. That would be awesome.

Obviously you've never played the game then, maybe super metroid > MP1 or 2, but I dont see the point in making a new wii metroid game that doesn't take advantage of the wii's controls, to me it woudl just be a big waste
I'm Australian, of course I haven't played it. Nintendo is too patheticly incompetent to get the game here on time.
Anyway, its hard to beat a classic. That's all I'm saying, which is why OOT will always be better than TP. A new 2D Metroid would be awesome for those who still appreciate how much fun the 2D games are.
I just enjoy them more, but don't get me wrong. You've seen my Prime review, I love the first two. I just have a soft spot for 2D Metroid that will cause me to respect Super Metroid more (it is my favourite game of all time now after all)
As far as Metroid goes, I'm giving Dread, or some type of 2D DS game a 75% chance. As for Retro, I really hope they create a new FPS. The controls in Corruption would be perfect for a shooter so they'd already be more than half way there.
Super Metroid < Metroid Prime 3
Super Metroid = Metroid Prime 3
Yay for compromise!
Having played both, Metroid Prime 3> Super Metroid
It really is just a matter of preference I guess. If you grew up with Super Metroid it'll always have a soft spot in your heart. My first console was a Playstation so I never got attached to Super Metroid (or any 2D era games for that matter) before I started playing the series in 3D.
